Hallo stencil lovers!
It is me , Marlene, from ART BY MARLENE. Today I have a brand new tutorial for you.
I am going to combine two of The Crafter’s Workshop (those amazing ones by Kathy Cano-Murillo)stencils with one of my own kitty stamps, that I designed for Marianne Design B.V. In this journal spread I would like to show you, that stencils can be really handy as a aid to create interest and pattern to a page, without using the stencil as the main feature or using it as a whole.
I thought I would mention that The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some products to create this project. This post may contain affiliate links, but, the opinions I share are solely my own.
HOW TO START:
First draw some hills on your journal page using a pencil or acrylic paint. I used DecoArts Americana paint. You can start filling it with some colour, using brighter, lighter tones at the front. Do leave some white space to stamp your image.
I am going to use one of my hippie cat stamps as my feature image, you can draw an image or use a similar stamp.
Now fill in the rest of your background(hills) with acrylic paint, leaving the stamped image white. Remember, to keep it interesting, I advise you to paint every hill a different colour, but to keep it well balanced …use colours from the same colour family.
Now, get out that lovely Chica Doodles stencil(TCW 654)…we are going to create flowers in the foreground with it.
By flipping your stencil around and rotating it to different angles, you can find lots of lovely flowers in this stencil. I used a makeup sponge to pounce colour through the stencil. You can use a single image on your stencil more than once, that is no problem (I did with the leaves). Because my background is done in cool tones, I am using warm tones to stencil with, to create contrast.
With coloured pencils add some detail and shading.
By using a white paintmarker and a fineliner you can add more lines and highlights, it gives your image a more hand drawn look. I also decided to extend the “flightpath” of my paper airplane and I even drew another one, next to it….almost as if there is someone else playing with a paper plane too. With my watercolours I added colour to my hippie cat. Using the Chica words stencil (TCW650), I added the word hola, by pouncing acrylic paint through my stencil! (I LOVE THIS STENCIL!!)
I spattered turquoise and white diluted acrylic onto my page, just to bring all the colours together and give it that final touch . With my fineliner I accentuated the stencilled word, by adding shading to only one side.
I hope you enjoyed this short tutorial on how to combine stencils in a mixed media/ art journaling project.
Be sure, if you try this at home, to share it with us on social media.
