Hi, hi! It’s Carmen Medlin, Signature Designer for The Crafter’s Workshop. I’m going to show you a very tropical-looking sea turtle art piece I made with my stencil designs TCW610 Sea Turtles 12×12 and TCW613 Pretty Succulents 12×12.
I made a 10×8″ space for this project, and started by using a stencil brush with my gouache paints to tap in the large sea turtle diving off of the page.
Next, I created anenome-like shapes using one of the Pretty Succulents. I wanted some of them to be a darker blue than the turtle, and some of them in pinks and oranges for a warm contrast.
I painted in more flowy anenome shapes to fill in around the stencil anenomes, this time using a fine-tipped waterbrush. I wanted to put some text in there, and it is easiest to do that by sketching it out first in pencil.
Some of the stenciled succulent-anenomes got a little lost, so I defined them further with more paint. I also followed the pencil lines to paint “Go with the Flow…”
Wouldn’t it be neat if this turtle were diving into the ocean? Yeah! I whipped out my indigo blue marker for this part. Adding little bubbles at the end of the splashes made the water even splashier. There’s a bit of colored pencil in there too for more color above water.
Hey, more bubbles! I made these by sketching circles in white colored pencil first, then adding the highlights with white gouache. Tropical goodness!

Love this!
Love it! Thank you for sharing this. Looked like batik to me. I tried it with Golden Fluid Acrylics on Yupo paper and got an interesting effect.
