Hello dear friends! This is Carmen Whitehead back with you again sharing a little spooky project with you! Halloween is upon us and today I’m creating a Halloween hauntings tag for The Crafter’s Workshop Design Team. My kids are grown now so I don’t go trick or treating anymore. But, now I enjoy creating art for this holiday! This tag is a tribute to Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, The Raven, that only knows to say the words “never more”.
I remember reading this poem in High School English class and to be honest I had to look it up again to get all the details. Definitely, as creepy now as it was then!
For this project I started with a #8 manilla tag and did the first layer with DecoArt Media Line Gesso. This will prepare the surface for the layers of acrylic paint and help them keep their vibrant colors.
The next layer was Americana Acrylic paint in True Ochre and Natural Grey to start the look of the wall. I then used The Crafter’s Workshop TCW563s Tuscan Wall with Heritage Brick and Raw Umber paint. This stencil is quickly becoming one of my favorites!
I decided I wanted the brick part of the tag to have a crackled look so I first layered the entire tag with matte medium, once dry, I applied crackle glaze to the red brick parts. Once it dried naturally (don’t use a heat gun!), I rubbed the entire tag with antiquing cream in Raw Umber. The cream got into all the cracks that were now on the bricks and gave the tag an overall darker more “haunted” look.
No haunted tag is complete without some spider webs! I used The Crafter’s Workshop TCW2081 Radar Remnant with a sprits of DecoArt Media Spritz in Titanium White.
For the Raven I used The Crafter’s Workshop TCW586s Mini Raven Mosaic with Americana Acrylic in Soft Black. Lots of details in this stencil, but this raven was the perfect size for my tag.
To write the words I used Imagine Crafts Pico Embellisher in black. This paint is wonderful to write with, but you really have to be careful not to squeeze the bottle too hard.
Here you can really see the crackle on the bricks.
I hope you enjoyed this tag tutorial and a little bit different Halloween haunting with Edgar Allen Poe’s Raven. I hope you find the inspiration to read the poem again, but most of all to create a haunted tag of your own!
Remember to come back often, our team is always up to something creative!
