Hello friends!  Carmen here sharing with you how I started drawing faces. Drawing girl faces is one of my favorite art mediums and I’m always practicing and improving.  But, sometimes (especially in the beginning) you need a little help to get started.

 I love the Crafter’s Workshop Template 12″X12″-Many Faces
stencil  (tcw545) from The Crafter’s Workshhop, it comes in a 12″ x 12″ for larger faces or a 6″ x 6″ for smaller faces.

This stencil has a variety of 5 different faces and looks.  The different shapes of the head, eyes and lips make it easy to create a variety of looks.  Sketching is a great place to start practicing your faces.  I like using the Strathmore Sketch Book, graphite pencil, a blending stump and a kneaded eraser.

Start off by selecting a face and tracing the lines with the graphite pencil.  It doesn’t have to be perfect because you just want the basic structure.

Then start adding details and connecting lines.  This is where you start creating her look and personality.  Create a neck line and shoulders so you can start seeing a real girl instead of just a floating head.

Next, be creative in her hair style.  She can have long flowing hair or maybe even braids.  Finally, give her face some depth by using the blending stump to create shadows.

Continue practicing with the different faces on the stencil.  Here is another example…

The next step would be to start adding some color with colored pencils.  You can also change the angle of the eyes or the thickness of the eye brows or lips.

Remember the stencil is to give you a start, the basic features of the face, and you will add the details and personality to your girl.
