Art Journal Page – all about layers

Hi there! Tammy (aka Tambarambaa) here today to share a colorful Art Journal Page that begins with a black background and layers up color creating a page that POPS!

TCW provided me with some amazing goodies to play with, but the art and ideas are my own.

Just love that bird stencil and as soon as I received it in my box of supplies, I knew it would be showing up in my Art Journal fairly soon.

So I began this page by adding TCW9001 White Gesso to the background of my black Art Journal. I used a dry brush and ensured I didn’t go all the way to the edges.

Now it’s time to add layers and layers of color and stencils. I used a stack of new stencils for this part of the process. I grabbed stencil TCW991 Leafy Fans and lay this down in three sections of my page, and added using a make up sponge, I dabbed orange paint through the stencil.

I then repeated this process using stencil TCW994 Modern Art Circles and hot pink paint.

Keep building those layers. I made sure I had some stencils with different sized shapes and pattens.

Next I chose stencil TCW972 Petal Splash and blue acrylic paint.

Then I chose TCW1042 Hole Punch Stencil and lime paint, and then a gorgeous new leaf stencil TCW985 Striped Leaves with a turquoise paint. I kept layering and filling in all the gaps until all the areas with white gesso were filled.

Ok background is complete. Now it’s time to add the focal point. For this I grabbed that beautiful stencil TCW979 Bluebird. I lay this over the background and then sponged TCW9002 Black Gesso over the entire bird, even around the edges.

That magic of lifting up the stencil NEVER gets old!! Ta-da!!

Now I wanted the page to have a bit more of an arty feel, so I selected stencil TCW964 Encircled and added some white paint and pink paint through it, plus a few splatters too.

I then decided to add a touch more black gesso in to ensure I had a spot to add some journaling.

I just love all those amazing patterns and layers of color.

I love the way the bird just fits perfectly on the page by using some black gesso, and matching this to the page. It just works.

That’s it from me today. I hope this page has inspired you to get creative and throw some color around.

Much love,
