Nothing square about Neon….. Art Journal Page

Hi everyone, Tammy (aka Tambarambaa) here to share another art journal page with you all.

TCW provided me with lots of awesome goodies to play with but the art and opinions are my own.

First up, sorry about the shadows and background in the photos. We are in the depth of Winter here and the days are so dreary – this is as good as I could get it! Just be distracted by the goregous bright colors instead. At least they bring some warmth to my soul.

I went with some Neo colors for this one, and began by just slapping down some color….. you’ll notice that there is some method to my madness. Firstly, I always use odd numbers – and usually go with the magic 3. You’ll notice 3 orange, 3 yellow, etc. This is the secret to creating balance and giving the page a random feel which suits art journaling perfectly.

I came in with the honeycomb section of TCW219 Punchinella Stencil and sponged paint through it in a few random parts, trying to ‘attach’ it to it’s paint color blob so it looked like it belonged. I hope this makes sense? I know what I am trying to say. Lol.

I then grabbed stencil TCW202 Harlequin and sponged TCW9002 Black Gesso through the stencil with a makeup sponge. For this part, I work quickly, to ensure I don’t have time to think too much. When I think – I start mulling over where to place it and somehow it comes out more blockish. NOT the look I’m going for – I want it to feel loose and free.

I also turn the stencil over and use the stencil as a stamp – no need to waste that gesso and it adds to the grungy feel.

adding black squares with a paint pen and stencil by tracing and overlapping

Now I grab stencil TCW2311 Triple Squares Slimline and I trace the squares over the page using a paint pen, overlapping them and focusing mainly across the middle. I want to leave some white space on the top and bottom as this helps the eye to focus on the page. This is important when using bold colors – it can look a mess, so although you want it to look random, it needs to feel natural and edgy.

adding different sized squares using a retro squares stencil

I then repeated this process using TCW154 Retro Squares Stencil. This stencil is cool because it allowed me to add in different sized squares.

I used both a fine and a thick black paint pen for some variance. Then I added a few scribbles here and there.

Time to add a quote, a few flicks of paint and a border and you are done!!

A quick and easy one today.
