Super Thick glitter Gel

How to create fun glitter no mess card projects

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with a fun set of sparkly cards, with an easy technique that everyone can do! I totally love glitters, but I don’t like them to go everywhere and with this technique you can create a gorgeous glittery card with all the glitters you already have on hand and it’s totally mess free!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post contains affiliate links.

Step 1:

I started my project by die cutting two rectangle panels, two sizes smaller then my card base, from thicker card stock. Then I temporarily adhered my stencil of choice over the rectangle panel using low tack tape.

Next I mixed some of the wonderful new The Crafter’s Workshop “Super Thick Gel” (which dries clear and shiny) with some fine glitter I have on hand on my glass work surface. You can add a fairly large amount of glitter, when you mix the gel with the glitter all the glitter needs to be covered and you must still be able to spread it out with you palette knife. This way I created three colours of thick glitter gel using three colours of fine glitter (silver, gold and rose gold).

Step 2:

Spread the thick glitter gel you created over your stencil using a palette knife, remove the stencil carefully and wash under the sink. Adhere another stencil over the second rectangle panel and proceed in the same way. You don’t need a lot of the mixture to cover both stencil designs (I could create four cards with the amount I had on my work surface). While the gel is wet it looks milky.

For today’s project I used two of the gorgeous new The Crafter’s Workshop stencils: “Boxwood Print” (TCW903s) and “Fantasy Tile” (TCW882s).

Step 3:

While the gel dries it turns hard and clear and all the glitter is contained in the gel, no rubbing of or glitter falling of your project! And isn’t the shimmer stunning!

Step 4:

Such sparkly backgrounds don’t need much!

For the first card I stamped my sentiment (Power Poppy “Planning for Magnolias” stamp set) using Spectrum Noir Alcohol-Proof ink in “Pebble” (which is a dark brown colour). Then I created a butterfly by stamping the butterfly image from the Crafter’s Companion “Newspaper Collage” stamp set onto thicker paper using the same brown ink as I used for the sentiment. Next I coloured the butterfly using Spectrum Noir Aqua Markers in “Chocolate”, “Topaz” and “Marigold”, in combination with an aquabrush and when dry I added some details using a white Sakura Gelly Roll Pen.

Because I felt something was missing I then pressed the butterfly in my VersaMark ink pad (which is sticky ink) and covered the entire butterfly with clear embossing powder and melted that with my heat tool. This I did twice. It created just the look that I was going for!

For my second card I die cut the Sending sentiment ( Simon Says Stamp ) twice from dark brown mirror card stock and adhered both layers together using strong glue. Next I stamped one of the sentiments from the Simon Says Stamp “Tiny Words” sentiment onto matching rose gold coloured card stock using the same brown ink as mentioned before and cut a strip from the paper.

For both cards I created a dark brown mat slightly larger then my first rectangle panel and adhered both rectangle panels together using liquid glue. This combination I adhered to a white linen textured card base using one millimetre thick foam tape. And to finish my cards I now only have to adhere the butterfly and die cut sentiment on top using one millimetre thick foam tape and strong glue.
