Make Magical Marks | Art Journal page

Some days I feel like creating an art journal page, but I don’t really feel inspired enough to create a focal point. In cases like these, I really enjoy the process of mark making instead of a focal point.

Today I will show you step by step how to create a mark making art journal page.

You can view the video tutorial here:

To start off my art journal page today, I wanted to play with some Ken Oliver – color bursts and stencils to get some quick loose color on the page. I enjoy how the color bursts give natural flow to the page. To do this, grab your favorite color of color bursts and a pattern stencil from TCW with medium sized openings. I chose TCW855 – Linked Tiles because the pattern is so pretty and the openings are perfect.

With your stencil placed as flat as it will go, sprinkle the color bursts powder over the stencil in small quantities. Spritz through the stencil and the powders with water to activate the powder. Now watch the magic happen.

TOP TIP: Don’t spray too much water, as it will seep under your stencil and ruin your beautiful design. Less is more ๐Ÿ™‚

Now we have a basic background in place we can continue with the rest of the page. Its pretty busy as it is, so I will mute it down by adding more colors, but solid. I add a variety of colors that will go with purple using a paint brush and make patches here and there. Using a hot pink, I also add some spots (marks) with my fingers.

I love how I am still able to see the background and those lovely color burst powders shine through.

Next I used charcoal to create some basic marks. It was really fun to make, and try different marks out. You can also use a pencil, pen or paint to do this step. I finished the page off using a white posca paint pen for even more contrast. Lastly added some phrases stickers, and calling this page done ๐Ÿ™‚

Don’t be afraid to mix medias, the results are usually fantastic, and if not, see it as a learning curb.

TOP TIP: Don’t use your white Posca paint pen over the color bursts, it will activate and ruin your pen. I only used the posca over acrylic paints ๐Ÿ™‚

Today we played with TCW Stencils, Ken Oliver – Color burst, Acrylic paint, Charcoal pencils, Posca paint pens and Phrase stickers.

Hope you all enjoyed this post on mark making today.

Till next time friends ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. This was absolutely the best post in quite some time. Adding a video for us newbies to this process was the greatest idea ever. I learned so much and it answered so many questions. Jeanine is a natural teacher and knows how to promote your products with imagination and inspiration. Iโ€™m so glad I got to share in this tutorial. Thanks.
