Art Journal Page: Be like a Tree

How to create a fun art and colourful art journal page using text and stencils

Hi everyone, Heidi here! First of all I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of you fabulous blog readers a wonderful 2019! That all of your dreams for this  new year may come true!

For today’s project I would like to show you a fun art journal page, with a bit of bling!

Let’s get started!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

How to create a fun art and colourful art journal page using text and stencils

Step 1:

Today I’m working in my Studio Light A4 sized journal. This paper doesn’t take erasing very well, that is why I started with pencilling in the quote that I wanted to use with a graphite pencil, when ready I made the lines lighter with a kneaded eraser. Then I applied a wash of Ecoline (comparable to Dr. Ph. Martin’s in the US) in the colour 390 over entire page, using a brush, and making sure that the colour was more diluted with water on the bottom part of the page where my quote is.

Step 2:

Now I can go over the lines of the quote using a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (s). By making the pencil lines lighter before adding the wash of colour and now adding the black pen over the lines I don’t need to erase at this stage (I was also afraid the background wash colour would come of when I would have to erase heavily now, leaving me with ugly patches).

Next I’m going to pencil in the lines of a gorgeous The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Distressed Lace“ (TCW803), by putting the stencil over my page and tracing the lines with a sharp pencil.

After taking the picture above I lightened the lines with the kneaded eraser (not a regular one, I don’t want ugly patches) so that they won’t be too visible after my next step.

Step 3:

Then it’s time to colour the design that I just created, using Ecoline number 422. I created three mixtures, one pure from the bottle and each next one with more water to dilute the colour. And then I coloured in the stencil design area’s using a small brush. Making the colour darker and stronger around the edges and the top part of the design and lightening the colour around the quote area.

When completely dry I then placed a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Mystic Tree“ (TCW814s) over the top part of my page and applied some The Crafter’s Workshop “Tacky-when-Dry Gel Medium“ over the stencil using a palette knife. Then I set the page aside to dry. In the picture you can hardly see the tree design, because the medium dries clear, then you know that you’re ready for the next step. I love how elegant this tree design is!

Step 4:

Now it’s time for the bling part: turn of the fan, don’t breathe (kidding), and then apply Nuvo Gilding Flakes over the tacky tree design. I know, this stuff goes everywhere, but it’s so gorgeous! When you have applied enough of the gilding flakes, take a dry stippling brush and rub of the parts that are not attached to the design.

I felt that the tree design wasn’t standing out enough so next I traced the stencil design with the same black pen that I used before for the quote.

Step 5:

For my finishing touches I decided to trace the outer lines of the tree and the circle shape from the stencil with a white Gelly Roll Pen to pull the tree design more to the front. Then I splattered with some watered down The Crafter’s Workshop “White Gesso“, using a brush, and waited for the paint to dry and then I went around the edges of the page with a foam applicator tool and Distress Ink in the colour “Aged Mahogany” to finish my project!
