Art Journal Page: Growth

Step by step art journal page tutorial with doodling, stencils and Gel Press mono prints

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I would like to show you a fun art journal page for which I used some Gel Press mono prints. I’m working in my Winsor & Newton Heavy Weight Wire-O Sketch Book.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post also contains affiliate links.

If you have never worked with a Gel Press mono printing plate before then I would recommend reading THIS post so you can start with the basics! Be warned: mono printing is very addictive and totally fun!

Step 1

I created a bunch of prints with the Gel Press mono printing plate, acrylic paints in a colour combination that spoke to me and of course some fabulous The Crafter’s Workshop stencils: I lifted prints with some 250 grams paper and I also kept the A4 printer paper sheets that where used to clean my brayer and stencils of on.

Step 2:

On this project I used two prints created with the Gel Press mono printing plate and also two sheets of printer paper that where used to clean my brayer of on.

I used the following The Crafter’s Workshop stencils on today’s project for the mono printing process:

“Free Swirl“ (TCW778s)

“Twinkle“ (TCW2163)

“Scalloped Mandala“ (TCW775s)

And I used the following paint colours:

– DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Marigold“;

– DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Pansy Lavender“;

– DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Laguna“;

– DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Worn Penny“.

Next I’m going to work on my actual art journal page: I cut the A4 printer paper sheets in a size that I wanted (for me that’s 14,5 x 20,5 cm for each panel). I edged each panel using Archival Ink in the colour “Jet Black“ using a foam applicator tool and then I adhered the panels to the art journal using The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium“ and a brush (wash the brush afterwards).

Step 3:

Now I’m going to tear the prints that I lifted from the Gel Press mono printing plate in a shape and size that I like for this particular page and adhere them to the project I already have also using The Crafter’s Workshop Matte Gel Medium.

When I create my art journal pages I always feel that they need to be perfect, which is absolutely not true, I just find it difficult to let go of control, that is why I think I sometimes seem to struggle with creating projects with my Gel Press mono printing plate: you have to let go of control to create the most beautiful projects. I often like the A4 printer paper sheets best because I’m not focusing on them, they are a by product of the prints that I lift! That’s why I choose today’s quote for this particular page: I would really love to grow to a point where I enjoy the loose creative way more then having the control!

In pencilled in the quote with a graphite pencil and then went over the lines with a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (s).

Step 4:

To ad some interesting details to my page I first applied some The Crafter’s Workshop Metallic Modeling Paste in the colour “Copper Penny“ over the “Twinkle“ stencil that I used before, using a palette knife.

After the modeling paste had dried I applied the same black ink that I used before over the “Free Swirl“ stencil that I used before, using a foam applicator tool.

Then I doodled a little on the page using a white Gelly Roll Pen and to finish my project I added some splatters using Coliro Pearl Colors by FineTec GmbH in the colour “Sterling Silver“.

And that’s it for today’s fun art journal project!
