Art Journal Page: Two Hearts

How to create a fun art journal page using color mixing theory

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with a fun and colourful art journal page featuring lots of gorgeous The Crafter’s Workshop products.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

——————————–

Today I’m working in my Winsor & Newton Heavy Weight Wire-O Sketch Book. I started my project by cutting two card stock panels in the size that I wanted (which for me is: 14,5 x 20,5 cm for each panel). I adhered the panels together on the back using removable tape.

Step 1:

On my work surface I mixed two custom paint colours: the first colour is a dark aubergine colour that I created by mixing The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Candy Apple Red“ with The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Grape Jelly“ (about 3:1) and then I created a fun turquoise colour by mixing The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Kale Smoothie“ with The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Blue Jellybean“ (about 1:1).

With these two custom made paint colours I painted the two card stock panels that I created before and let them dry. As you can see the paint is not covering the entire page with an opaque colour, by adding different layers on top the marks from the paint brush will become less visible.

Step 2:

For my next step I’m going to create another custom paint colour: I wanted a light pink colour. For this I mixed The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Spun Sugar“ with The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the colour “Raspberry Sorbet“ (about 1:1).

This mixture I spread thinly on my glass work surface and then picked up with a dry stippling brush a little at a time (don’t apply to much paint at once, it might seep underneath the stencil, and it’s best to keep the brush upright) and applied the paint over two The Crafter’s Workshop stencils: first I used “Brick Poetry“ (TCW776s) on the sides and fading inwards, and then I used “Micro Hearts “ (TCW791s) in the middle section. The paint will dry fast so you don’t have to wait long to go to the next step.

Step 3:

In my next step I’m going to ad different colours of The Crafter’s Workshop Metallic Modeling Pastes to the project (for this technique I’m going to mix two colours on the art journal page itself, it’s easier to have two palette knifes on hand if you don’t want to contaminate the different colours to much).

First I applied some of the The Crafter’s Workshop “Grecian Gold“ Metallic Modeling Paste over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Two Hearts“ (TCW771s) and mixed on the stencil with a little of The Crafter’s Workshop “White Pearl“ Metallic Modeling Paste. I’m focusing on the left hand page but I’m also adding some of this design to the right top hand page to bring in some balance.

When this was dry I added some more designs and colours to the project because it all felt a little bit to empty for me. So, I applied some of the The Crafter’s Workshop “Sterling Silver“ Metallic Modeling Paste over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Journal Musings“ (TCW768s) and I mixed on the stencil with the same White Pearl Metallic Modeling Paste that I used before. This I repeated on several area’s of the art journal pages and then set aside to dry.

While this was drying I worked on my title: I choose a quote that I found on line and pencilled that in on a piece of Strathmore “Toned Gray“ paper, first with a graphite pencil and then going over the lines with a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (s). I used a calligraphy style that I taught myself as a child. When I was happy I tore around the edges to create a more fun edge and edged this piece of paper with Versafine “Onyx Black“ ink and using a foam applicator tool.

When the modeling paste was dry I added a few more hearts to the background design using the same Micro Hearts stencil that I used before but this time I used Onyx Black ink and a foam applicator tool over the stencil. Then I ‘m adding the title to my page using one millimetre thick foam tape and I edged both art journal pages with Archival Ink in the colour “Coffee“.

Now all I have to do is adhere the pages to the actual journal: for this I used The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium“.

I love how all the colours on this page work together and it was so much fun to create the paint colours that I wanted to use by myself.

I wish you a creative day!

We would love to see what you create with The Crafters Workshop Stencils and Mediums.
You can share it with us on our Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest using hashtag #tcwstencillove.

  1. I love your colors and beautiful artwork! The quote is one of my favorites…thanks for reminding me of it. Now I can use it on my nephew’s wedding gift! And I think I know where to get some inspiration from!
