Have you ever tried reverse glass painting? Let me show you how easy it is with stencils!

I started off the project by spray painting the back of the glass plate I found at a discount store with a coat of Matte Finish from the Liberty Stain & Varnish Corp. This enabled me to use regular acrylic paints to add the designs. The first element I added to the back of the plate were circles made with a hand-carved stamp and archival black ink.

The next step was to add colorful patterns in each of the circles with acrylic paint and a cosmetic sponge. I used the 6×6 Overlapping Stripes, the 6×6 Patterns, Sequin Waste Bit and Bokeh Fragment.

To make each of the patterned filled circles stand out, I sponged white acrylic paint over the shapes.

Tip: When you reverse glass paint, you have to give some thought to when you add each step. If this had been on a card, you would have painted the background, added some patterns in a circle shape, and finally stamped on the black outlines. Sometimes it helps to actually create the pattern on a card first and then reverse the steps for the glass project.

To fill in the background around all of the circles, I used the 6×6 Mumsy stencil and black acrylic paint. I also added another layer of white paint to the back of the circles.

Last but not least, I added in my background color using two shades of green and a turquoise. I used cosmetic sponges to apply the paint twice to make it as opaque as possible.

I then used a couple coats of spray sealer on the back of the plate to protect all the layers of paint. Because I never painted on the front part of the glass, I can use the plate to serve food if I wish. The plate definitely needs to be hand washed, however.
