Happy Valentine’s Day my friends! I hope you’re spending it with the ones you love and love you back. This is Carmen and today I’m sharing with you a commission canvas I made this week for a very special little girl named Violeta that happens to love pink and purple!
One of my favorite and most popular quotes to use for little girls is the Shakespeare quote from A MidSummer Night’s Dream, “Though she be but little, she is fierce”. I was recently contacted to create a portrait of Violeta with this quote using some of her favorite colors.
The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.
Here are the supplies I used…
- 8″ x 10″ canvas
- TCW547s Repeating Pods stencil
- TCW570s Woven stencil
- TCW541s Believe Script stencil
- TCW552s Daisy Splash stencil
- TCW545s Many Faces
- Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Amethyst
- DecoArt Media Mister in Purple
- Gesso
- modeling paste
- Americana Acrylic paint in Wisteria, Pansy Lavender, Indian Turquoise, Soft Heather, Flesh Tone, Raw Sienna, Soft Black and Payne’s Grey
- Bubble wrap and plastic tube
After the layer of gesso dried, I added the first layer of acrylic paint using Wisteria and Soft Heather randomly on the canvas. The second layer started with the repeating pods stencil and spritzes of the glimmer mist in Amethyst and the mister in purple. This created just enough dimension using the same stencil. The woven stencil was then used with pansy lavender to balance the background.
I love using random objects to create details on a background. Here I used some bubble wrap with the soft heather and a small plastic tube with both soft heather and pansy lavender. To finish off the background I added some modeling paste mixed with soft heather to use with the believe script stencil.
As you can see below, I used the many faces stencil to do a slight outline of where I wanted the face to be. These are great for starting out portraits.
I then free-handed creating the rest of the face, hair and body. To get the right skin tone I mixed the flesh tone paint with some raw sienna until I was happy with the match. The hair was created with a soft black and then details of peyne’s grey. The shirt and little cupcake necklace was inspired by a picture of her and I thought would make it even more personal. The daisy splash stencil provided some more detail on the turquoise top.
The final detail was the glasses and words. I studied the picture provided and I think I got the style and color just right. I can see why Violeta loves pink and purple, the combination looks so vibrant in this canvas.
You can see how easy it is to create a spectacular background with colors that you love and represent you. Give it a try next time you’re feeling some inspiration to create!
Blessings,
