Hello Everyone, Jen here. Today’s post is about making a stenciled clay trivet.
Supplies:
- Modeling Clay
- Stencils : I used TCW 558 Twig & Berries, TCW 560 Hex flowers, TCW 586 S Raven Mosaic & TCW 588 S Moroccan Sun
- Parchment paper (for rolling clay out on)
- Rolling pin
- Butterknife
- paint
- foam paint brush
- optional (glue & felt squares for bottom)
Step I: Roll out your clay with a rolling pin, to desired size on parchment paper. You’ll want your piece to be at least 1/4 inch thick.
Then cut with a butter knife. I cut mine into 4 x 6.
Step 2: Choose your stencil.
I used TCW 558 Twig & Berries. I found pressing the stencil w/my hands into the clay worked best.

Here I added the bird from TCW 586 S Raven Mosaic.

Second design, using TCW 560 Hex flowers.

Third design, using heart portion of TCW 588 S Moroccan Sun.
I added some tree leafs to create more impressions on each side of my trivet, gently pressing the leaf into the clay.
Step 3: Drying
You can let each your designs air dry overnight. If you wish to speed the process up, you can bake at 190 degrees for 60 mins. place your design on a baking sheet. Be sure to flip over your clay trivets, with a spatula, halfway through the baking time.
Let cool then your are ready for step 4!
Step 4: Adding color
once your designs are dry you can paint them! Leave light layers of paint, this will let your designs shine through.
I used a spray ink and regular acrylic gloss paint.
Step 5: Optional: adding felt to back.
cut felt squares to fit the bottom of your trivet and glue on.
Hope you enjoyed this,
Cheers,
