Art Journal Page: In Memory

How to make a simple art journal page using minimum supplies

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I would like to show you an art journal page that I created in memory of my late father in law. He past away last year and I created this page on the day that his ashes were scattered. Now I feel I’m ready to show you his page.

This page was created in a 13 x 21 cm Art Plus Moleskine Sketchbook (I keep an empty page between two used pages, when the project is finished I glue them together, this way anything bleeding through won’t damage a previous project and when you want to poke a hole in the page you can).

——————————–

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

——————————–

I took step by step pictures in case you would like to follow along:

How to make a simple art journal page using minimum supplies

Step 1:

I first applied a coat of Dylusions Paint in the colour “Chopped Pesto“ mixed with a little of Dylusions Paint in the colour “White Linen“. I applied the paints with a foam applicator tool and I mixed the colours on the page as I went, keeping the left page lighter because on that page I wanted to write a poem. The fun thing about these Dylusions Paints is that you don’t need to prime your page, these paints even look better if you don’t prime the page! And you only need a little because they are very pigmented.

When the page was dry, which doesn’t take a long time, I applied Dylusions Paint in the colour  “Melted Chocolate“ over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Distressed Details“ (TCW754s) with a foam applicator tool, using the tiniest amount of paint, dabbing of on a craft mat and then applying the paint through the stencil. If you use too much paint it will seep underneath the stencil.

Step 2:

My father in law loved music and that is why I wanted to incorporate some element of music in this page: I decided to stamp the Kaisercraft “Sheet Music” stamp in several places using Archival Ink in the colour “Jet Black”.

When the ink was dry I applied Deco Art Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour “Burlap“ over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Onion Blossoms“ (TCW726s) using a foam applicator tool and again taking care that I didn’t have too much paint on the applicator.

Do you know how it feels when you find exactly the right stencil (or stamp or colour or embellishment) for the feeling that you would like to express in your project? This was that stencil for me for this project. These blossoms somehow reminded me of the plant that is called gypsophila which, where I live, is used for funeral (but also wedding) flower pieces.

I knew I wanted to use an image on top of the paint so I extended the stems of the blossoms: I placed the stencil a second time on the project, only lower, and applied the Burlap paint over the same stencil again (you can see in the picture what I mean). And then I choose two other places on the left hand page to also apply this design to.

I love how the different layers of paint show up on the background that I first created and then merge while drying and work together.

Step 3:

My father is law’ work and hobby was photography, though he was retired he still gave courses and workshops to teach others the joy he experienced. He also collected old camera’s. That’s why I choose an image of an old camera (from my stash) to ad on the right hand page. I adhered the image with Ranger Medium Matte.

On the left hand page I pencilled in a poem that I found on line and that I felt expressed best how our family and many other people who have lost a loved one feel. I used a calligraphy style that I tough myself as a kid. I first pencilled in the text with a graphite pencil and then I went over these lines with a Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen in “Black“ (S).

When this ink was dry I edged both pages with first Archival Ink in the colour “Coffee “ and then with the same black ink that we used before. This defines the page a bit more. And to finish this project I adhered the previous page to this page using The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium“ (TCW9011) using a brush (wash your brush afterwards).

Even though today’s art journal page was created with a sad occasion in mind I hope you still enjoyed the step by step process and, since life is too short, I wish you all lots of creativity and happiness!

We would love to see what you create with The Crafters Workshop Stencils and Mediums.

  1. Beautiful pages. So thoughtful and caring. Sorry for your loss. Your father-in-law would be very pleased and proud.

  2. Beautiful pages Heidi, I love that poem too. I also love the way you wrote the letters of the poem, it would be great to have a stencil with beautiful fonts like this rather than the usual ones that everyone does. Thank you for sharing xx
