Mixed Media Art Journal: Radar Dreams

It’s a new year! How are the resolutions going? What’s your one little word for the year? What dreams are within your radar? What does 2022 hold for you? Infinite possibilities….

Process video is linked down below for the full tutorial.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

I sprinkled various colors of ColorSparx into my ceramic palette along with a few drops of water.

In my mixed media journal (a Canson XL) I added a layer of water onto the left side of the two-page layout before adding in my watercolors one at a time in a gradient effect. I also added a black liquid watercolor along the edges of the page. I mixed the colors together with a substantial amount of water and soaked up any excess onto scrap pieces of paper. I let this dry completely before moving on.

For the second layer, I added a layer of black acrylic paint through 12×12 TCW767 Floral Radar Stencil with a foam blending tool.

On the right side of the layout, I glued down my printable focal image and stenciled TCW9065 Fuchsia Stencil Butter, TCW9063 Ocean Blue Stencil Butter, and TCW9066 Orchid Stencil Butter through 12×12 TCW454 Specimens Stencil with a sponge around the edges and over top of the image.

To add a little more brightness to the page, I applied magenta acrylic paint through 6×6 TCW945 Starflower Net Stencil a few places along the layout. With black acrylic paint, I stenciled on some butterflies using 12×12 TCW949 Dragonfly Collage Stencil and TCW2313 Monarch Trio Slimline Stencil.

A few details not pictured: white acrylic paint over TCW2308 Clouds Slimline Stencil behind the DREAM letters on the left and black acrylic paint through 6×6 TCW419 Halftone Border Stencil along the edges.

Since there was so much black on the page and the butterflies didn’t stand out enough, I outlined them and the radar stenciled image with a silver gel pen and added splashes of white pearl acrylic ink over the entire layout. Below are some close up photos and the process video on my YouTube channel. Enjoy!

  1. So many cool techniques illustrated here. Thank you. I’m curious about how you added that image. What is the image printed on (what kind/weight of paper)? Did you glue your image down with just gesso? Or did you add that to blend the edges after gluing? And if so, what did you glue the image with?
