Ludo Lederhosen

To his right, a highball glass containing an ol' fashioned cocktail with an orange ball shaped ice sphere. The ice matches the bouncy ball Ludo has trapped in his mouth. In the background, bright fall leaves and golden wheat sway in the breeze, forming the perfect backdrop for this Oktoberfest inspired artwork.

Meet Ludo Lederhosen, Mutt Extraordinaire. Half German, half Irish. Loves craft beers, good Irish whiskey, orange bouncy balls with blue stripes, and a good ol’ fashioned cocktail. Check out this close up look at how Ludo was created in all his finery against a backdrop of stunning fall leaves and wheat in celebration of Oktoberfest!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

I have to tell you, fall or Autumn is one of my most favorite seasons here in the US. The incredible range of leaves and colors is nothing like I’ve experienced anywhere else before. If you follow me on my Instagram account, you’ll know just what I mean by the incredible photos I have been able to take and post on my dog walks. I find the colors, textures, and shapes so inspiring, don’t you?

I really wanted to experiment with our stunning stencil butters over a black background, so I used our TCW9002 Black Gesso to prepare the background of a 10″ square cradled wood panel. Using multiple colors of stencil butters in Lime, Gamboge, Fuchsia, Crimson, Chartreuse, and Marigold, I set about creating some beautiful blended leaves using our TCW2421 Blowing Leaves stencil. I used a paintbrush to apply the stencil butters lightly and directly through the stencil onto the black gessoed wood panel. I wanted some of the gesso texture to show through the leaves, and using a paintbrush also allowed me to easily blend the stencil butter colors together, just like blending acrylic paint. And as we like to say around here, (stencil) butter just makes everything better! I really love how this turned out, and I will definitely be using this technique again in the future.

Next, it was time to create Ludo over the top of the stenciled background. To create the fur texture, I love to use our TCW9005 White Modeling Paste applied with our Plastic Palette Knife, and then use a fine needle tool to scrape the individual hairs and hair patterns into the modeling paste. I then hand paint the colors into the fur.

I like to use our TCW9001 Matte Gel Medium on a paintbrush to attach all the collage and assemblage items, so for this work that included his hat, (embroidery thread) whiskers, (fabric) bow tie, and (leather paper) lederhosen. I also used the gel medium to build up his nose, giving it three dimensionality and texture.

Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving from our entire TCW team to yours, we’re so very thankful that you choose to read our blog posts and use our products. We are so grateful for YOU!
