Old School AJ Spread

Hello Everyone! Happy Monday!

Today I am going old school. Some of the design team members have been chatting about the first stencil they bought, so I thought I would share with you my very first The Crafters Workshop stencil…. TCW202  Harlequin stencil. (As you can see, it has been used a couple times!)  I remember being so nervous about trying these and can still feel the anxiety about getting them dirty! Obviously I have gotten over that!     So today I am showing you how to create a mixed media project with just 1 stencil and some gesso! You don’t need a lot to make art!

Finished art journal spread using one stencil.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project.

The opinions I share are solely my own.

To start off with, I grabbed my brayer, some acrylic paint, and 3 sheets of white cardstock 110lb. I then placed my stencil over the paper, added paint and brayered a thick layer of paint over that. I lifted the wet stencil off the cardstock and flipped it over onto another sheet of white cardstock. and in my case another one! I used a lot of paint! But I got 3 backgrounds to play with.

Materials used TCW 202 arlequin stencil, a brayer, some acrylic paint and white 110 lb cardstock. Layer a thick layer of paint over the stencil using the brayer.
Three prints from one layer of paint on white cardstock.

Once all the paint dries, place your stencil OVER the painted area as shown, leaving the white space visible between the harlequins. I then used a word stamp and some archival ink to match the paint and stamped over the entire white space. This was one of the very first techniques I used oh so many years ago.. in fact, I believe it was from a tutorial from our very own Jamie!!

Place dried stencil back over paint, and use a word stamp and ink to stamp words onto the white spaces.

Here’s a closer look at what I did…

Then I grabbed some old chipboard letters from back in the day when I scrapbooked a lot. I used TCW9001 White Gesso, and gesso over random letters and once dried, I placed them randomly in the centre of my art journal spread.

Use TCW9001 White Gesso to paint over some random chipboard letters and place in middle area of your art journal spread.

To finish off, I added some black splatters, some washi, my little old school gal and a sentiment. Voila! See… you don’t need a lot of supplies or a lot of time to get creative! You only need 10 minutes! Give it an old school try and share with us!

Thanks for taking the time to see my project for today!

We would love to see your projects made with TCW products!

  1. This is super cute!! Going to give it a try. If I may ask where did you get the picture of that girl and did you type out the words?

    Thank you!
