Mother’s Day flowers – Mixed Media Board project

Flowers background close-up using many stencils

Hello TCW friends

Mothers Day is Sunday 9th May here in Australia. Only a few days away.

My siblings and I, and all the grandchildren, usually descend upon my mum’s house bringing food, flowers and gifts. This year, we sadly cannot get together in the same way, so I wanted to make something less perishable than a bunch of flowers for her, so I could send it for her to keep. I decided to create a colourful vase of flowers using many of The Crafter’s Workshop stencils.

Hopefully she will be able to put these flowers up on her wall instead.

– The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own –

If you enjoy seeing a page come together quickly, you can watch my process video below. Captions will indicate what products I have used along the way.

Here is a rough step-by-step, if you want to play along..

1 – Start by collecting a number of different papers – book pages, dictionary pages, foreign language papers, numerical tables… anything you can get your hand on that can be stencilled onto.

2 – Also grab a number of different stencils, all in 6×6 with good overall coverage. I used a selection of 19 different stencils in all. Stencil each different paper with a different colour and with a different stencil.

3 – Using TCW9072 – Mixed Media Sign Board, paint the entire surface in one tone. in a portrait orientation make the tone slightly darker towards the bottom.

4 – Once you have all your papers stencilled and the background painted. Use TCW9011 – Matte Medium to glue small torn pieces of the papers onto the board until it is covered.

5 – Now that you have your board covered, sketch out some flowers. Use some watercolour to paint in a feint outline. This colour will blend in with the next layer. Any shape is fine, or you can use a large 12×12 stencil and trace through to get a floral image.

6 – Using TCW9001 – White Gesso, paint everything that is not flowers…the negative space around the flower sketch. This will block out your stencilled papers in the background but will leave the colourful papers showing as the flower blooms.

7 – Next use TCW9067 – Gamboge Stencil Butter through TCW5008 – Random Dots to create some small yellow highlights on a few of the blooms. Do the same with TCW9065 Fuchsia Stencil Butter through TCW909 – Quadrangle Fan.

8 – Use pencils to trace around each of the blooms and add some colour. Also use paint pens to add some dots and doodles to add interest to the flowers.

9 – Use green paint and purple ink to add some interesting leaves within the blooms.

10 – Add a sentiment onto the page that suits your recipient.

I hope this page brings a smile to your face and motivates you to sit at your own craft table. I would love to see what you create with the the fab stencils and pastes from The Crafter’s Workshop.
