Luna Blanca Mixed Media Art Decor by Renae Davis

Ya’ll know I love doing mixed media in my journals but I decided to try something new and work on a mixed media board (that I tend to hoard) and I loved it! My theme for this year is the moon so I now I have a beautiful decor piece to hang in my studio. There’s a process video linked at the bottom as well. Enjoy!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

To prep my surface for all the inky goodness going on it, I applied an even layer of TCW 9001 White Gesso on TCW9054 Mixed Media Board 12×12 with a brush.

To get a sense of where I wanted to lay everything out before I applied my focal point, I traced with a pencil a plastic version of my scrapbook paper moon ( I cut out of plastic folder material) and traced around the moon. The stenciled outline will allow me to visually plan the layers underneath the focal point that is the moon.

Distress Inks on gessoed mixed media boards

On the gessoed surface, I sprayed a mixture of Distress Oxide in Salvaged Patina and Distress Spray Stain in Tumbled Glass and Weathered Wood. I let the majority of the ink stay in the middle of the mixed media board leaving the edges to be faded out to white.

In top right and bottom left corner of the board, I applied a layer of TCW9005 White Modeling Paste through TCW2304 Bricks Vertical Slimline Stencil with a palette knife. Once dried, I sprayed a light layer of the same Distress inks used on the background to give the brick texture some shadow onto of the bright blue inks.

Over the entire layout, I applied a layer of TCW9012 Shimmery Goodness through 12×12 TCW851 Dotted Rings Stencil with a cosmetic sponge.

Over the entire layout, I applied a layer of TCW9010 Silver Gesso through 12×12 TCW541 Believe Script Stencil with a cosmetic sponge- concentrating on the sparse areas left behind the previous applied stencil.

I laid down my focal point along with some paper embellishments from 49 and Market Vintage Artistry Shore Ephemera Stack. I applied a layer of TCW9041 Platinum Modeling Paste through 6×6 TCW5004 Star Shower Stencil with a palette knife around the edges of the moon.

To apply these fabric flowers and the chipboard embellishments (pictured top right corner) I applied a generous layer of TCW9006 Gel Medium Gloss with a palette knife on the back before placing it down. The wonderful thing about using gel medium is that it’s thick enough that you don’t have to worry about it bonding. It will bond!

To apply the white leaf ribbon seen here (yes, it’s actual ribbon), I applied a layer of TCW9011 Matte Gel Medium onto the back of the ribbon with a palette knife, pressed it on the surface and applied a thin layer over top to ensure adhesion. I switched to the Matte Medium so there wouldn’t be any glossy streaks across my layout… plus it would dry a bit sticky.

A moon layout wouldn’t be complete without some star struck glimmer stars! I applied a layer of TCW9040 White Pearl Modeling Paste through both 6×6 and 12×12 TCW922 Ethereal Stencil in a few areas around the layout, mainly onto of the textured brick in the top right corner. I also applied a layer of TCW9040 White Pearl Modeling Paste around the edges of the layout to help reign in all the collage elements onto the board.

I added several different ephemera elements and embellishments to the layout as well as some white pearl acrylic ink and called this project complete! Below are some close up photos as well as a link to the process video on my YouTube channel!
