Everything has beauty… even the simplest of animals like the cow. In Australia we often see cows and sheep when we drive out of the big cities, they become a ubiquitous part of our landscape. But viewed up close, cows are gorgeous animals with big brown eyes and soft ears that beg to be scratched. I thought I’d put the TCW869 Bessie stencil to work in a page celebrating this wonderful animal.
For this page I’ve used the Prima Spring Farm House range, but I’m sure you will find lots of suitable patterned papers you can use. Ginghams, stripes, florals would all work well. I layered up the pieces without any adhesive until I had a pleasing arrangement. I wanted to stencil the background so this gives me an idea of where I can stencil for best effect.
Next I stencilled the background using the TCW5006 Woodgrain using Distress Oxide inks in shades of brown and black. Using multiple colours across the pattern adds a touch of realism and depth to the stencilling.
Then I inked the edges of all of the patterned paper pieces and adhered them onto the page. As I was adding the Bessie image, I decided the page needed a splatter of ink so used some watered down black paint with a wet brush to give spatters.
I decided that the Bessie image would be the focal image of the page and created it by stencilling with TCW9009 Black Modeling Paste. I didn’t want the whole of the image so masked off just Bessie’s head with masking tape. I find that when I do this, you first need to decide which way the image is to be facing (I wanted her facing into the page) so placed the masking tape on the ‘top side’ of the stencil. It is a good idea to turn the stencil over to check you have covered all the extraneous bits of the design prior to starting.
Once Bessie was stencilled, I carefully lifted the stencil and set her aside to dry fully. Then she was layered with black card and added to the page along with a Tim Holtz quote.
