Light and Delicate Art Journal Page

Hello everyone!

Robyn here, sharing a technique for combining stencilling over a stamped image. I’ve used a tag to show of this technique and added it to an art journal page, but you could easily use this idea for a handmade card.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

To start this art journal page, I created a spray ink background using Ranger Distress Oxide sprays in pale green and blue. I enjoy the mottled effect spray inks can give to a background.

Adding stencilling to stamped image using Distress inks in shades of blue

Next add a stamped image to a large, brown Kraft tag. I’ve used a Darkroom Door Mason Jar stamp in black ink and embossed it with clear embossing powder for little dimension.

Then I stencilled over a portion of the bottle using Distress Oxide inks through the TCW922 Ethereal stencil. I used a mix of three different shades of blue and kept the pattern of colour random.

To fill in one of the top corners of the tag I stencilled the central flourish from TCW909 Quadrangle Fan with a mix of red and orange Distress Oxide inks. A stamped flower image added a little something to sit in the jar. A bit of ribbon for the top and sponging around the edges finishes the tag.

Tip
Make sure you clean the stencil after use as the dye based stamping inks will transfer colour onto your next project.

Stenciling 'ethereal' definition from TCW922 Ethereal stencil on bottom of page

TCW922 Ethereal stencil has a wonderful section of text as part of the design and I thought it would look great added to the page. It is actually a dictionary definition for the word ‘ethereal’. It has been stencilled carefully along the bottom edge using a red-toned Distress Oxide ink. This placement means that the tag will nestle nicely and leave the words readable.

Stenciling TCW907 Pointelle over background of page

Next, I filled in the background with some pattern using TCW907 Pointelle stencil and black ink. The pattern is stencilled in a random fashion over the page and some areas are lightly stencilled to break up the pattern a little.

I decided I wanted to make a feature of the word ‘ethereal’ that starts the dictionary definition. The Crafters Workshop makes a great Black Modeling Paste (TCW9009), it dries quickly with a wonderful matt effect. I simply stencilled with TCW9009 Black Modeling Paste through the word and carefully lifted the stencil so as not to smudge the lettering.

I decided that the TCW9009 Black Modeling Paste would also look great smeared onto some cardstock and then used as a layer for my stencilled word.

Note to self (and all of you) – when doing something like this it is usually best to put paste onto separate pieces of cardstock as you are very likely to put your fingers onto wet modelling paste!

The layered word was given some dimension using foam tape and adds a lovely touch to the page.
