Hello everyone!
Robyn here, sharing a technique for taking your stencilling to a new dimension. I love stencilling over a section of painted cardstock and fussy cutting the design to add to my art journal pages and cards. It gives a very different effect compared to the usual methods of flat stencilling and allows you to create some unique embellishments for your projects.

For this art journal page, I have used Carmen Medlin’s TCW920 Tropical Fronds in both the 6×6 and 12×12 sizes plus Gabrielle Pollacco’s TCW925 Nature’s Circuitry to create the stencilled embellishments. I love how the moth and dragonfly morph into cyborgs!
Start the background by painting your page black.
Stencil a part of the background using large TCW920 Tropical Fronds with acrylic paint in shades of blue, green and white. Allow the colour to mix on the sponge to give a variegated effect. Build the pattern by stencilling parts of the pattern and working outwards from the centre of the page. This will also give you a chance to select which leaves you want to have on your background.
Use a white gel pen or paint pen to outline the larger leaf shapes so they are defined a little. Add extra leaf shapes using the smaller TCW920 Tropical Fronds in white.
Smoosh some acrylic paint over scraps of watercolour card and allow to dry. I’ve used warm colours in yellow, pink and orange. The idea is to cover the card with random colour.
Stencil moths and dragonflies from the TCW925 Nature’s Circuitry using black permanent ink. Fussy cut leaving a fine border around each stencilled area. Depending on the size of your page, you may need 3 – 7 pieces, just keep to an odd number for a nice visual balance.
Adhere the images across the page by just the body centre, allowing their wings to lift off the page a little.
The final step is to add a quote. You can either use a printed sticker quote or create your own in Microsoft Word. Trim out and add to your page to finish it off.
Just in case you aren’t sure how to create a white text on black background in Word, here are my steps:
- Insert a text box
- Add text in your favourite font (I’ve used one with a vintage typewriter look)
- Format text so that you have good spacing all around the characters
- Select text and turn it ‘white’
- Select text box and ‘fill’ with black colour
- The white text will then pop against a black background

- TCW925 Nature’s Circuitry
- TCW920 Tropical Fronds
- Acrylic paint
- Fine white paint or gel pen
- Black permanent ink
- Stamped or printed quote
