How to build a 6x6 project step by step

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with my take on the TCW Spring Challenge!

The main criteria for the challenge are:

And of course, we would love to see what gorgeous projects you can come up with! You can even win a prize, wouldn’t that be fabulous! Share your creation anytime between April 6 and April 28 on social media using the hashtag #TCWspringchallenge. TCW will select a random winner for a grand prize package which will be announced on May 5 on Instagram (prize package can only be shipped within the USA unfortunately).

So, let’s get started!

Step 1:

For my 6×6 inch surface I’m using a The Crafter’s Workshop 6×6 inch “Mixed Media Board”.

On this Mixed Media Board I will adhere a grayboard tag. My colors of choice are a vibrant red, a purplish pink and a (orange/yellow) gold color. The two TCW stencils that I will use on today’s project are “Irises” (TCW864s) and “Natures Circuitry” (TCW925s).

My Spring themed embellishment will be a stamp set by Altenew called “Flower Garden”.

I’m also adding in a chipboard title and some sequins.

Step 2:

To prepare my surfaces I’m applying The Crafter’s Workshop “White Gesso” to the TCW Mixed Media Board, the grayboard tag and the chipboard title using a brush.

Next, I apply some The Crafter’s Workshop “Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste” over the Irises stencil using a palette knife, onto the Mixed Media Board and the grayboard tag and setting them aside to dry.

Step 3:

Around the grayboard tag, I’m wrapping some white twine, knotting on the back. Then I’m starting to add color to these background pieces. I use a fan brush or sprinkle the colored powder directly from the container onto the project, spray the pigment with water and dry with my heat tool when I like what I have. I repeat several times until I’m happy with the result. For my vibrant red color, I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magical in “Rizzo’s Rowdy Red” and for my (orange/yellow) gold color I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magical Shaker in “California Poppy Gold”. The pigment will not only color the background but also the white twine. I didn’t add any color to the chipboard title yet!

Later on, I decided to also add some splatters to the background panels using Finetec Pearl Colors by Coliro GmbH in the color “Sterling Silver”.

Step 4:

Next, I’m working on my butterfly: for this I take a piece of The Crafter’s Workshop “Watercolor Paper” by Ken Oliver and add two colors to the paper, creating the background color for the butterfly shape. I used the same red colored Magical that I used before and combined this with Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magical in “Frenchy’s Pink Pouf”, which is my purplish pink color.

I added the colored pigment to the paper using a fan brush and sprayed it with water, which makes the color run. When I liked what I had, I dried the color with my heat tool. I first created two areas of red and then added the purplish-pink color to the middle part (if you like you can first place the butterfly stencil on the paper and look what size area needs to be covered).

Now that the background is covered, place the butterfly stencil over the colored paper and apply Archival “Jet Black” over the butterfly design using a foam applicator tool.

Trace the stencil design with a black fine tip marker or a black Sakura Glaze pen, as I did. Let it dry!

Fussy cut the butterfly image and add some highlights using a white Sakura Gelly Roll Pen.

Step 5:

Time to work on my embellishments: for this, I stamped several of the flower and leaf images from the Altenew stamp set onto Strathmore Bristol Smooth Surface Paper using Versafine “Onyx Black” ink and clear heat embossing afterward. Then I colored the images using the same Lindy’s Stamp Gang red, purplish-pink and orange/yellow/gold colors as used before in combination with water and a small brush. When the coloring was done I added some highlights using a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen.

Step 6:

Adhere the grayboard tag, the flower and leaf images and the butterfly to the Mixed Media Board using The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium” and a brush (don’t forget to wash the brush right after).

Step 7:

I colored two pieces of the same white twine as used before using the red pigment powder that I used before and adhered that through the hole in the grayboard tag. I also applied a couple of layers of Lindy’s Stamp Gang embossing powders in “Wowzers White”, “Gimme Five Gold” and “Pop Rock Purple” to the chipboard title and adhered that to the project using the same Matte Gel Medium as before.

And to finish my project I adhered some Pretty Pink Posh “Sparkling Clear Sequins” in different sizes to the project.
