TCW Spring Challenge: Fairy Nest

Spring always represents a period of renewal and rebirth. It also, especially this year, it brings with it… hope.

The Crafters Workshop is having a Spring Challenge. Here are the basic rules to participate:

  • create any project on one 6×6 base (can be a card, canvas, page, off the page project…any substrate)
  • use at least two (2) TCW stencils
  • use at least three (3) colors in your project
  • use at least one embellishment in/on your project
  • share your project on social media using #TCWspringchallenge between April 6 and April 28

Like many of you, my art is my solace in times of challenge. I also love a bit of make believe right now. For my challenge piece, I chose to create a whimsical fairy nest…along with the hope and and belief in something pure and new.

To create this project, I started with a TCW9053 6″ x 6″ Mixed Media Board. I then randomly painted it with two shades of green paint.

Next I stenciled a 3rd green using TCW924 Lush Petals.

I then used artificial floral stems, leaves, and a nest. I also created a fairy “cocoon” to go in the nest. Alternately, tiny eggs can be put into the nest.

I love dragonflies as well as fairies…to me they also represent spring and rebirth. I created a dragonfly using TCW925 Nature’s Circuitry, TCW9052 Super Thick Gel, and TCW9038 Antique Gold Modeling Paste. I applied the Super thick gel with my finger to sheet of Duralar (an acetate-like material for mixed media) using the “natural” side of the dragonfly stencil. I allowed the one side to dry and then flipped the stencil to add the “natural” wing to the other side. I used the gold medium to add the body, antenna, and legs.

I then cut out the dragonfly close to the edge of the stenciling. I added a strip of yarn to the body to give more dimension. I also added some glitter glue to the back side to add some iridescent sparkle (though it didn’t photograph well).

The dragonfly was then added to one of the greenery branches to appear that the dragonfly was visiting the tiny fairy nest.

This was a very fun and soothing project to create. The Crafters Workshop did provide me with several of the products used, but the opinions expressed are my own.

Enjoy the little things right now.

Stay Safe.

Stay Home.

Stay Positive.
