Robyn here, sharing a stenciling technique you can use to create unique backgrounds in your art journal.

Whenever I have left over paint on my paint palette, I like to just brush it onto empty pages in my art journal to save wasting any delicious colour and this page has grown from that process.
I started with a page that had a few swipes of pink and orange and added snippets of collage papers to cover parts of the surface. I wasn’t looking for a full coverage as I wanted to see the colour beneath. I brushed extra colour over parts of the collage to start the process of integrating the background.
Next, I added sections of stamping using a bold, graphic patterned stamp and permanent black ink.
I decided I wanted to have the pattern of the stencil peeking out of my final background, allowing some of the layers beneath to show through. I’ve used TCW905 Leaf Emblem to stencil a section of the page using shades of blue.
Once the stencilled area was done, I extended the blue colours across the page to bring cohesion to the background. The paint was quite translucent, so peeks of base layers showed through.
To enable me to separate additional elements from the background, I picked out one of the colours in the initial layer and added a swish of that across a section of the page. Two fussy cut, stamped leafy stems and some words finished the page.
