Art Journal Page: Winter

How to create a wintry art journal page with handlettering and stencil

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop Blog with a fun wintry art journal project.

Let’s get started!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post contains affiliate links.

Step 1:

Today I’m working in my A4 sized art journal. I started my picking my quote and pencilling it on the page using a graphite pencil.

Step 2:

Then I took some Distress Oxide Ink in “Fossilized Amber” and put some of it on my glass work surface and sprayed the ink with water. Next I took a piece of plastic (like the packaging stamp sets come in) and picked up the ink with the plastic and smooshed it on the paper (this technique is called “ink smooshing”). You can see the plastic sheet in the second picture, on the left hand side of the art journal page! This I repeated until I liked what I had.

Step 3:

After I died the ink on the paper with my heat tool and went over the quote with a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (s) the page now looks like this.

Step 4:

Next I placed my stencil of choice on the page and applied Distress Oxide Ink in “Peeled Paint” over the stencil using a foam applicator tool. I worked in several steps replacing the stencil when needed. For today’s project I choose the gorgeous The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Asian Floral” (TCW865s), it is such a stunning stencil with all it’s detail work.

Step 5:

To create the look like the flower design is in front of the yellow background I went around the green flower images with a white Sakura Gelly Roll Pen.

Step 6:

For a little extra wintry detail I then wanted to add some snowflakes: for this I took some watercolour paper and added different layers of Ken Oliver Color Burst by The Crafter’s Workshop in “Orchid” and “Yellow Gold”, sprayed with water and dried in between layers using my heat tool. You can pick up the colour from your work surface or add new powder to the paper for this, whatever you prefer. I picked up the colour that was still on my work surface.

Then I die cut some snowflake shapes for the watercolour paper using snowflake dies by Crealies (you can use any snowflake die you have). I die cut six snowflakes and added some Lindy’s Stamp Gang embossing powder in “Magic Moon Pearl” to two of them.

Step 7:

I adhered the snowflakes to my page using strong glue and added some gold star shapes (to the larger ones) and orange rhinestones on top (of all of them), also using the strong glue. And to finish this fun page I edged my page in some area’s using Memento Ink in “Elderberry” and a foam applicator tool. I did this to make the purple of the snowflakes come back in a different area of the page and to create a sharper edge to my page as well.
