Art Deco Cards

How to create fun and colourful backgrounds using stencils

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with a fun set of cards that you can decorate to be either suitable for a male or a female recipient. The star for sure is the gorgeous background! I will show you step by step how you can create these backgrounds for yourself!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

Step 1:

I started my project by die cutting two rectangle watercolour paper panels, each panel two sizes smaller then my card bases. I temporarily adhered one die cut panel to my glass work surface and then placed my stencil of choice over the panel. If you don’t have glass work surface to work on than you can work on a craft sheet or a piece of plastic, make sure you protect your work surface though!

My stencil of choice for today’s project is the beautiful The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Art Deco Leaves” (TCW450s).

Next I sprinkled some Ken Oliver Color Bursts by The Crafter’s Workshop onto the watercolour panel, only using a tiny little bit of the powder, as you can see in the picture. I used a bit of Tangerine and a bit of Orchid, both from the “Unicorn Magic” set.

Step 2:

Then I sprayed the panel with water! This is what happens when you spray that tiny amount of powder, it’s like an explosion of colour.

Let it sit for a few moments and let the colour particles do their thing. Remove the stencil carefully AND place it colour side up in a safe place, DON’T wash the stencil yet!

Take a clean paper kitchen towel and dab of the excess liquid on the watercolour panel and dry the panel with your heat tool or let it air dry.

Step 3:

Replace the rectangle watercolour panel with a new one and take the stencil with the colour still on top.

Step 4:

When it looks dry you can spray a little water on the stencil. Next place the stencil, coloured side down, onto the new rectangle watercolour panel.

Step 5:

This step is optional, just see what you like best: I sprayed the paper and the stencil from the back a little, which makes the colour run a little bit. If you like a more clean look then skip this step!

Step 6:

Take the stencil of and dry the panel with your heat tool or let it air dry. Now you can clean your stencil under the sink.

And this is what both of my panels look like now. Aren’t they gorgeous! My fingers are just itching to try out new colour combinations and I can’t even pick which one is my favourite background!

Step 7:

Next I created splatters on both panels using a Coliro Pearl Color in “Walnut”.

Step 8:

As my focal point I choose the typewriter in combination with some sentiments from the Stampin’Up “P.S. You’re the Best” stamp set. I stamped two typewriters on the same watercolour paper that I used before and then added the sentiments using my MISTI stamping tool and some Spectrum Noir Alcohol Proof ink in “Pebble”. I fussy cut the images leaving a small border.

Instead of this typewriter image you can also use some flower stamps or any other image that you prefer.

For my slightly larger mat I choose some dark craft coloured card stock and adhered both rectangle panels together using liquid glue. This combination I adhered to a white rectangle card base using one millimetre thick foam tape.

And to finish my cards I took some Stampin’Up Copper Metallic Thread, wound it around my fingers, put it on the card and adhered the typewriter on top using one millimetre thick foam tape.
