So many of us love the look of glitter, but hate the mess. I actually don’t mind the mess so much, but I really don’t want to send others cards when I know that glitter might get all over them. The glitter gel that I’ve shared here before is a great way to add glitter to your cards through your stencils and not worry about it staying put. But there are times I want to have glitter die cuts or strips on my cards so I figured out a way to create my own glitter paper that doesn’t shed! There are a few different products you can use to create your own glitter paper, and each one gives a different result. The first is by the far the shiniest and has texture to it. I used Gloss Gel Medium and added fine gold glitter. After mixing the glitter gel I applied it in a thin layer over heavy weight white cardstock. This is the trickiest part. You can a thin and even layer. I used a palette knife, but use whatever tool works best for you!
For the second project I again went with gel medium, but instead of gloss I used the matte version. This still allows the glitter to show, but it is a much more matte version. It’s really different and beautiful! Again, I added fine glitter (red this time) and once mixed add it to heavy weight white cardstock!
The final project is by the far the most non-shedding version of glitter paper and has the least amount of texture! Again, I used gloss gel medium and mixed it with a fine copper glitter. But this time, instead of spreading the glitter gel onto white cardstock I spread it onto acetate. Because acetate is clear you have two options with this glitter paper. You can use the textured side with the glitter on the outside, or you can flip it over and have the glitter securely underneath the acetate with a really smooth surface. This doesn’t diminish the glitter or shine at all, it just gives a smoother surface and because the glitter is behind plastic, there absolutely NO shedding!
A few things to know about this technique. First, fine glitter does work best here, but you can use a chunkier glitter, too. Just know that the chunkier glitter may shed a bit, whereas the fine glitter will be securely embedded in the gel medium. Also, you can customize this gel to whatever suites your needs! You can even mix your own glitter for complete customization!
This glitter paper is so easy to make and such a great way to use up that glitter we all have stashed away! I also love the fact it is so easy to cut and die cut!
