See the Beauty in Stencil Layering!

Hello everyone!

Robyn here sharing an art journal page featuring layering stencilled areas using two differently sized stencils of the same design.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

I enjoy the creative outcomes that happen when you try layering together stencils of the same pattern in different sizes. The outcome can be a bit unpredictable in terms of aesthetics, but if you combine relatively simple designs the results can be awesome. For this project, I used large and small size of the TCW876 Screen View stencil.

I started my page with a roughly painted layer of light green acrylic paint. Using each of the sizes of TCW876 Screen View stencil I stencilled randomly over the page with a mix of blue and white acrylic paint. I allowed the colours to blend a little on my stencilling sponge so there was a graduation of colour over the page.

Stencil page edge with a dark coloured acrylic paint & remove colour through stencil

Once the page was dry, I gradually painted around the edges with a dark colour such as Dina Wakley’s Night. As I painted each area, I placed the small sized TCW876 Screen View stencil over the freshly painted area and removed areas of the paint away with a baby wipe. This gives a bit of a tone on tone effect of lifting colour from some areas so you can see the pattern beneath. I tried to do the page in sections so that the painted area didn’t have time to dry before I lifted it off through the stencil.

Arrange flower heads on page in a pleasing manner

I stamped some Paper Artsy flower images onto watercolour cardstock using black permanent ink and then coloured them using watercolours in vibrant colours. Once I had fussy cut the flower heads I laid them over my page into a pleasing design. My plan was to have the stems growing up from the right-hand side of the page in a messy, layered fashion so I drew some lines with a pencil to act as a guide for my penwork.

Ink in lines beneath flowers and then glue in place

Then I inked in my lines using the Sakura Pigma Micron black pen and glued the flower heads were then into place.

I decided the lower left-hand side of the page needed a little extra colour so I painted a small area with the blue paint, placed the small TCW876 Screen View and then removed a portion of the colour using the baby wipe in the same way was as above.

The page was finished with some loose doodled stems and lines to give the appearance of a messy style garden patch. Some white doodled lines were also added to the flower heads using a Sakura Gelly Roll white gel pen.
