Faux Encaustic with TCW Gel Medium

Hi Everyone! I’ve never tried faux encaustic and I love to experiment. I’m not sure it worked but this is how I created this spooky piece.

I started out by using a 5×5 wood panel. I added TCW195 Brocade stencil with Distress Oxide Ink.

Used Distress Oxide Ink through TCW195 Brocade Stencil to the 5×5 wood panel.

I loved the look but then I decided I wanted something different. I added with gray paint TCW865 Asian Floral stencil to the board. You’ll see it popping through on the final picture.

Here is where I forgot to take a picture because I was so excited to try the next step. I’m so sorry. I took TCW9011 Gel Medium Matte and a little bit of white chalk paint and mixed it just a little. The gel medium is white and dries clear so I didn’t want to add to much paint.

I added bits from my Halloween scrap box and glued them down with the gel medium. Over top of the pieces I added the faux encaustic paste.

I let it dry for a bit. It’s still not completely dry but it does add some mysterious mist. What you see on the pumpkin is dry but the rest is so thick it will take a few days to dry.

I will definitely try this again. I think I’ll go bigger! Have you tried faux encaustic? Inquiring minds want to know!
