Mixed media tag by Kassy Tousignant

Hi crafty friends! It’s Kassy Tousignant on the blog today. I have to say tags are one of my favorite things to make. They are quick and easy. There is no pressure to make anything special and it’s a great way to play with new supplies! I also love combining bright colors with black to create a strong contrast.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

The first step was to use some TCW9001 White Gesso to prime my tag. It’s important to prime your surface with any color gesso before you apply any colors and pigments on top.

The next step is to choose the TCW874 Poppy Grid stencil with some TCW9008 Clear Modeling Paste and a palette knife and spread the modeling paste through the stencil like frosting a cake! Make sure to clean your stencils after using any paste or gel.

Now it’s time to add the beautiful, bright colors! My favorite part. I am using some Ken Oliver’s Color Burst in Chartreuse, Turquoise, and Fuchsia. One piece to note, if you are going to mix cool and warm colors, it’s important to be careful they don’t blend too much or you will end up with mud. But if you can do it just right, you will have the most glorious punch of color contrast that is really exciting!

As I said earlier, I LOVE how the black brings out the color of the background and provides a wonderful contrast. I used TCW9009 Black Modeling Paste through the TCW876 Screen View stencil and it really adds some cool texture.

The final touch before adding the stamped and paper elements on top was to put some of the TCW9003 Gold Gesso on my mat and water it down to get a loose consistency. Then I loaded a fan brush and splattered some on my background. It is sooooo gorgeous when it dries!

Now we are ready for the finishing touches! I have added some patterned paper tags with a stamped image on top and finished with some doodling with a white paint pen. I also painted the resin crown with the TCW9003 Gold Gesso and used the TCW9008 Clear Modeling Paste to adhere it to the tag.

My tag is complete! I love the colors with the black and the gold splatter. The textures from the modeling pastes and stencils are outstanding!
