How I Choose between Light & Fluffy and Regular Modeling Paste

If there are rules on the use of modeling pastes, I don’t follow them. I love to play with supplies and see how far I can use them.

The reasons for my choice of pastes is asking myself do I want a solid or porous paste. That’s it. Just those two choices. To understand, please read below.

  • TCW9004 Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste dries porous. Its full of tiny holes that hold color. I like to use it when I want saturated color because all soaks into the paste. When it’s dry, I use either a paint brush or a spray of water to re-wet it to add color. Too much water or paint it will loose the stencil shape.
  • TCW9005 Modeling Paste dries solid. The paint, unless you mixed it in, will stay on top of the paste. It doesn’t soak into the paste. I love to use this when I’m using lots of paint. It stays solid.

For this project I’m using the new 2019 Summer stencil called TCW866 Cypress Tree.

To start the project I painted a landscape and I decided to use pinks, purples, blues and greens. I added the Cypress Tree to the canvas using TCW9044 Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste. I chose it because I want to add three different paint colors.

Here is a close up of the paste. I do not make sure it’s perfectly smooth. Trees aren’t smooth so I make sure there is extra texture on the tree.

When the paste dried I used a paint brush to add water to the paste to re-wet it. I use one of the following; watered down acrylic paint, high flow acrylics or acrylic inks. You can see below I used three different colors of paint on the tree. With this paste the paint soaks in and you can continue to add color to it. It mixes together and spreads. After this picture I changed the colors by adding a little water purples, blues and aqua.

Below you can see I added more purple to the tree to coordinate with the colors on the canvas.

To finish the bottom of the canvas I added the rest of the stencil with Modeling Paste.

When it was dry I used my fingers to add paint. Because the modeling paste dries solid, I can keep adding color not having to worry about the paste loosing its shape. Here it is all finished.

I hope you enjoyed how I choose pastes for my projects. We would love to see what you create with The Crafters Workshop Stencils and Mediums. You can share it with us on our Facebook pageInstagram, Twitter, and Pinterest using hashtag #tcwstencillove.
