Robyn here sharing a birthday card using one of The Crafter’s Workshop Summer brand-new stencils. I’ll share how to get a different effect to the usual stencilling with dye ink technique by substituting Distress Oxide inks. I love using them with my stencils!

Spring has appeared in Australia and my city of Brisbane is bursting with colour. It seems like all the flowers have decided to bloom at once! Perfect excuse to use the new TCW861 Happy Dandelions to celebrate.
I started my card by stencilling with TCW9004 Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste through the TCW861 Happy Dandelions onto a piece of watercolour card that was precut to suit my card. Although I used the smaller 6” x 6” size stencil, it was still a little too large for my card front so I taped off a small section of the stencil using masking tape before stencilling.
I love the beautiful detail in this stencil! The Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste is so quick to dry that this project is quite quick to make.
Tip: * Make sure you clean your stencil right away so the paste doesn’t dry in the design.
Once the modeling paste is dry, sponge the watercolour card with Distress Oxide inks using colours appropriate to the image. I used yellows around the flowers, greens for the stalks and blue around the top of the piece.
To give the raised areas of stencilling a bit of a pop, carefully replace the stencil over the image and stencil extra colour using Distress Oxide inks onto the image. You can change up the colour a little for a variegated effect as I have or just use the same colours. For example, I used a paler blue for the butterfly and then sponged over with a deep, dark blue.
Tip: *Don’t forget to clean your stencil after this step as the Distress Oxide inks will remain moveable and you don’t want them to ruin your next project.
Once the stencilling was done, I layered the card ready for a greeting. I decided I needed to refresh my stash of birthday cards so added a ‘Happy Birthday’ greeting to finish it off.

- Darkroom Door Happy Birthday stamp set & black stamping ink
