Dimensional Art Journal Page – Don’t Hide

painted paper flowers on art journal page

Hello again TCW friends

Great to be here with you this morning to share another fun TCW blog tutorial and video!

In today’s page, I am using the TCW750 – Dahlia Blooms – but in both the sizes it is available – (12×12 & 6×6). I am using a process that will add dimension to the page. The final page has a sculptural feel to it, as you can rearrange the way the flowers look each time you open the page up in your journal.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own

If you enjoy seeing a page come together quickly, you can just go ahead and watch the process video below. Captions within the video will tell you what products I have used along the way.

…here is the page, step-by-step…

1 – I randomly painted Dina Wakley Media, heavy body acrylic – Fuschia diagonally across the journal page

2 – Next, I used various stencils around the edge of this painted diagonal, blending the edge to bring the page together.
– TCW382 – Garden Gate
– TCW381 – Quatrefoil
– TCW481 – North Star
– TCW811 – Floral Statement

3 – Some mark making with my Stabilo Woody pencils follows.

4 – A final script stencil – TCW261 – Art Is – in a dark color (DWM – Night) brings dome clarity to the final background

You could stop here… but I continued on with an idea using the 12×12 version of the TCW750 – Dahlia Blooms stencil along with it’s 6×6 counterpart.

5 – I grab this gorgeous large floral stencil to begin to create the flowers for my sculptural additions to this page. I am using a large A3 piece of watercolor card to stencil onto.

6 – Using the largest flower, sponge through the stencil in rough circles around the flower centre. Beginning in the middle with a dark colour (DWM – Night), moving out in concentric circles, blending the colors somewhat through the stencil (DWM colors – Blackberry, Fuschia, Ruby, Blush & Tangerine). Cut out the flower from the card.

8 – Repeat this process for 2 large flowers. When you start using the 6×6 version of this same stencil… I used blue tones of paint only – Create 3 or 4 smaller flowers for your page. These smaller flowers will create a visual contrast, not only in size but also in color.

9 – Cut down the edge of each petal, on each flower with some scissors, so that each line of color, is separated.

10 – Position the flowers onto your page and stick down with double sided tape on the center back of each flower

11 – I added some brush lettering, cut from a magazine. It comes from the Allen Ginsberg quote:

“Concentrate on what you want to say to yourself and your friends. Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness. You say what you want to say when you don’t care who’s listening.” – Allen Ginsberg

I do hope you have enjoyed this walk through of my page and the accompanying video. Hopefully it gives you some inspiration to create your own dimensional art journal page.
