Creating Shimmery Texture in an Art Journal

Hello everyone!

Robyn here, it’s so good to be joining you today as part of the incoming 2019 Design Team. I’m looking forward to keeping you inspired through my love of mixed media and paper craft. For my first blog project, I thought I’d share a shimmery, textured art journal page. I love a bit of shimmer in my art journal and the fabulous The Crafter’s Workshop mixed media products give you lots of options.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

I started my project with a page from my Art by Marlene art journal and stencilled the lower, right hand corner with The Crafter’s Workshop Champagne Gold Modelling Paste (TCW9036) through The Crafter’s Workshop Spring Medallion (TCW827) stencil. I stencilled with an uneven finish to the edges and didn’t take the paste right up to or over the edge of the round stencil. This gave a lovely, unstructured look to my background.

I find it easiest to pick up my modelling paste with the back of my spatula as this makes it so simple to scrape across the stencil without a lot of messing around. I set the page aside to dry while I moved onto creating my focal image.

The echinacea flower stamp was inked up with a few shades of Ranger Distress Oxides, stamped onto smooth white cardstock, then fussy cut.

The Mini Mason Jar was also stamped onto smooth white cardstock using black Archival ink. I used a few different shades of blue Distress Ink to sponge the lower part of the jar then fussy cut. To give the jar a little extra impact, I sponged the lid and around the edges with watering can Archival Ink.

I layered the flower and mini mason jar images together with a few spots of wet glue and tied the top of the jar with a bit of twine so it was ready to add to my page.

Once the modelling paste was completely dry, I started to build up the background colour on my page using Faber-Castell Gelatos. I smooshed some Gelatos very lightly over the top of the textured area, gradually changing colour as I worked from the centre out to finish with my darkest colour.

Initially, I blended the colour with the tip of my finger and then gently used a baby wipe to spread the outer rings of colour over the rest of the page. I used a baby wipe to gently clean any colour from the top of the stencilling to reveal the beautiful gold shimmer.

I allowed the page to dry for a few minutes and then blended iridescent pink Gelato around the edges. This helped give the background some extra depth.

Once the background was finished, I attached the layered flower/Mason jar using wet glue and added a word sticker on foam tape to complete my page.
