The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

The Crafter's Workshop Blog Bloom Wildly with Stencilled Sunflowers by Robyn Wood

The sheer joy of a garden filled with sunflowers is something to celebrate so I thought I’d use the new TCW863 Dandelion Meadow for my first project from the new release.

The Crafter's Workshop Blog Distress Oxide spray art journal background

I started my page with a few random spritzes of Distress Oxide spray in yellow and blue. The colours mix beautifully to give soft shades of green that would work well for my page. I find the spray colours a little too intense but a thin layer of TCW9001 White Gesso.

Next I tore up a few scraps of paper to create some texture for the background of my page. I sponged over the torn paper with blue Distress Oxide spray mixed with a touch of TCW9001 White Gesso. The shapes created to look a little like clouds or distant mountains.

The 6×6 size of TCW863 Dandelion Meadow was perfect for stencilling across my Dylusions Dyalog journal page spread. I started with the stencil in the centre and stencilled using a short bristled brush and Distress Oxide inks. I used a blend of colours to give the flowers an interesting variegated look.

To fill in each side, I just moved the stencil around until I could match up the pattern of grass along the bottom and stencilled flowers on the far left and right. Once complete, I added a bit of extra sponging across the bottom of the page.

Don’t forget to clean your stencil after this step as the Distress Oxide inks will remain moveable and you don’t want them to muck up your next project.

The Crafter's Workshop Blog - how to create customised text

I love using words and quotes on my pages, so I thought I’d share a simple technique for adding your own. This will save you searching for a stamp or printed words that exactly match what you want.

I print mine out using a text box in Microsoft Word – I colour the text white and then fill the text box with black to give the white on black text look. I tend to print options out in different sizes so I can check which fits my page best. Then it is a simple matter of tearing or cutting around your words and adding them to your page.

  1. I love your pages. Can you further explain how you made your text boxes in word?? Please–I know i used to be able to print in white, but with the newer versions of software, I’ve not been able to do it Thank you.

    1. Hi! Sorry I had missed your comment until now. I’m so glad you like my projects.
Software updates do make it challenging to find how to do things like this. I’m on a Mac with the latest version of MS Office and initially create a text box and add my text. I get the sizing and font choices right while the text is in black, I also make sure the text box is much larger than the text itself to give me room to trim. Then I select the text, turn it white, then select the whole text box and change the ‘shape fill’ to black. The text should pop out as white wording on a black background.
      Hope this helps!
      Robyn
