Shadow Stenciling + A Video Tutorial

Hi everyone! It’s Lindsay, from Crafting While Caffeinated Blog & YouTube Channel, here with you today sharing another video tutorial. There are a ton of techniques to use with your stamps, and I love to find ways to adapt them and use them with my stencils! A quick way to add a lot of interest to images is adding shadows, which I do sometimes with my stamping, but it’s even easier to do with stencils! Be sure to watch the video below for all the details on this easy technique!

For my card today I used the gorgeous Wisteria stencil, but any of The Crafter’s Workshop stencils will work for this technique! I started by working on heavy weight white card stock and through the Wisteria stencil I applied two colors of pigment ink. You really need to use pigment ink for this technique so you can heat emboss the stenciled area. If you do not have pigment ink, you can use dye inks and then Versamark over the top.

After removing the stencil, I added clear embossing powder and heat set. This is going to create a resist effect for the next step in this technique which is adding the shadow!

The final step, like I said above, is adding the shadow to the stenciled image. I lined up the stencil directly over where I had just stenciled and heat embossed. Then, I shifted the stencil ever so slightly to the right and down – it’s really important to just move the stencil a bit here. You don’t want a shadow that’s two inches away. After securing the stencil, I added a gray DYE ink through it very lightly. I like to use a dye ink for this step because it settle into the paper for a softer, more true shadow look!

This Shadow Stenciling technique is that simple! All you need to do is finish your card however you wish. If you want to see how I finished the front of my card, you can watch the video above for all the details! I also share another quick background I made with the leftover pigment ink, so be sure to watch until the end.

If you are interested in the stencil I used today, you can find it listed and linked down below. Until next time, Happy Crafting!!
