Welcome Sign

How to create an industrial style welcome sign step by step

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I would like to show you this fun mixed media sign that I created for my brother’s new home, which he will decorate in an industrial style/theme!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

How to create an industrial style welcome sign step by step

Step 1:

First I looked for a piece of wood that would be suitable for a sign. Then I asked my father to drill the holes so I would be able later on to hang the sign with some rope or cord. Next I primed the wood plaque with two layers of The Crafter’s Workshop “White Gesso“ and a brush.

To add more texture to my project I then added one layer of Imagination Crafts Rusty Texture Patina Paint in “Cafe Creme“ using a brush. This paint has a sort of grainy plaster look and feel.

I also wanted to add some visual texture to my background without not being able to add my next layer in a neat way later on, so that is why I decided to add parts of The Crafter’s Workshop stencil design called “Blueprint“ (TCW813) using a foam applicator tool and Archival Ink in the colour “Watering Can“. Use the foam applicator tool in an up-and-down pouncing motion to not get stuck on the texture from the crème paint we added earlier.

Step 2:

Now I can add the text from The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Welcome“ (TCW2169) using The Crafter’s Workshop “Black Modeling Paste“ and a palette knife. Spread the modeling paste nice and evenly over the stencil with the palette knife and make sure that you don’t move the stencil while working (wash your stencil afterwards). Let it sit and dry on it’s own.

Step 3:

Now that my base is done I can add the embellishments for a more industrial look: I added some Mitform Castings gears to the project using The Crafter’s Workshop “Gloss Gel Medium“ and a brush (wash afterwards, the gel medium will work like a glue).

When dry, I splattered with some brown acrylic paint (DecoArt Americana “Light Cinnamon“) thinned down with water. For the splattering I used a brush.

After drying I spray varnished the project and adhered the robe/cord so that the sign can hang.
