Hello Everyone!! My name is Lindsay and I blog under the name Crafting While Caffeinated! I am so incredibly excited to be a part of The Crafter’s Workshop Design Team this term!! A little about me, I am primarily a card maker, but like so many of us, enjoy all sorts of crafts, woodworking, crochet, DIY decor, etc. I also LOVE to create video tutorials for all of my projects, which I am so happy to be sharing with you!

Today, I have a technique that I used to create a set of cards, but can be used in scrapbooking, mixed media, etc, called Silhouette Stenciling. Here’s the video tutorial, but I also have a few tips and tricks down below!

A few things to note about this technique – instead of using black ink, I find it better to use The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in Black Licorice. Here’s a closer photo why exactly I chose paint instead of ink for the Silhouette Stenciling technique. The ink has a more opaque finish, while the ink is still a bit transparent, whether you use a dye or pigment black ink and lots of layers.

Another tip – Painter’s tape is your best friend with the Silhouette Stenciling technique! Not only is it essential to mask your area for a colorful ink background, but it is so helpful to mask off different parts of the stencils so the paint only goes through the parts you want it to. Using paint gives such a better finished product, but it does get a little messy. Painter’s tape or masking tape will be your very best friend.

Finally, this technique is completely customizable! You can using any color palette for your background you want! You can check out my Color Combo Pinterest board HERE to help you, if you are like me and have a hard time coming up with new color combinations. And if you do want you can add shimmer, like I show in the video tutorial above, to the black paint. Or if you want a little dimension, The Crafter’s Workshop Black Modeling Paste, is a great way to get that effect!
