A Christmas Canvas

Hello Crafters!

Today I want to show you how I made this Mixed Media Canvas using a couple of Stencils and Mediums.

Supplies needed :

Note: I am a Design Team member for The Crafter’s Workshop; however, even though I use and love their products, all opinions are solely my own.

I started by covering my entire canvas with pieces of old book pages. I know that some people just do not love to tear down books, I do not like either but these books I buy are coming from the thrift store and so I feel less guilty when tearing them down since I give them a new purpose!

To glue down the pieces of paper I used the Matte Gel Medium…and let me tell you, it is AMAZING. The way it seals down the paper to the canvas is spectacular! I covered the entire canvas super fast!

I let it dry then I used the white gesso to cover it up. I didn’t use a lot of gesso, I just wanted to make sure that some part of the background was visible and some other not. I set aside to dry completely again.

I took some watercolors and I decided to use a cold palette for this Christmas Canvas – this because I am not so keen on traditional Christmas Colors…plus I wanted to use the snowflake stencil so I opted for a “cold feeling”! When I was satisfied with the background I dry it with the heat gun, then I grabbed the Snowflakes Stencil and with a sponge I applied the white gesso through it. I carefully removed the stencil and I absolutely love the effect over the watercolored background!

I let it dry, then with the Christmas Tree stencil and the light modeling paste I applied some texture. I love the script “Merry Christmas” on this stencil. I love the tiny stars you find there! I applied a generous amount of modeling paste then I let it dry.

To complete the canvas, I took the gold gesso, watered down a little bit and with the brush (the same one I used with the background that was still “dirty”) I applied the color over the script. I used the dirty brush because this way it was easier to make the gold gesso blend with the background!

And that’s it for todays!

We would love to see what you create with The Crafters Workshop Stencils and Mediums.
