Stencil Fun with Alcohol Ink and Yupo Paper

Oh the beautiful possibilities of alcohol ink are boundless, mix that with stencils, a bit of Light and fluffy modeling paste and Yupo paper and you have everything you need for a magical afternoon of creative exploration! Check out the supply list and tutorial below for creating a beautiful framed piece of art!

Supplies:
TCW684 Bird Gathering
Light and fluffy modeling paste
Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink (2 or 3 colors of your choice)
Yupo Paper
Palette Knife
Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen

Yupo Paper is such a fun way to play with color!

Yupo Paper is such a fun way to play with color!

First select the alcohol ink colors you would like to use for your project. I picked blue and yellow. Drop a few drops of your colors onto your Yupo paper, since Yupo is a synthetic plastic paper the Ink can’t soak into the fiber of the paper (because there isn’t fiber) the ink sits on top. Push the colors around with your palette knife and allow the colors to blend and bleed together. (you can see below my blue and yellow made a beautiful green) Play and experiment by adding more ink until you get a background you love.

Once your ink is completely dry use your stencil, modeling paste and palette knife to build up a stenciled layer on top of your background. I selected TCW684 Bird Gathering for my piece.

Modeling paste adds a whole new dimension to your inky background!

Once your modeling paste is completely dry (I waited for about 5 hours). Use a marker or artist pen with permanent ink to add some doodles, lines or extra character to your composition. Since I knew I was going to frame this piece I also laid down my matte before adding my extra elements so I could plan the final composition within the constraints of my frame area. I thought the motion lines behind the bird and the stark black ink and white bird was a nice contrast against the very colorful background.

My final framed piece is below! Its so amazing to me that a fairly simple frame can just bring a piece together and make it look finished on a whole new level! I am hanging this piece in my sons room by his window.
