Capture Love Wall Hanging

Kim Schofield, Corrugated Cardboard, Wall Hanging, TCW707

Hello crafty friends! Kim here with you today to take you through the creation of a simple wall hanging that I created from a scrap piece of cardboard. Interesting back story on my “discarded” cardboard creation…My youngest needed a box for his growing collection of Nerf toys and found one in our garage. However, he wanted the flaps removed so off to the craft room we went to find scissors that could easily do the job of cutting cardboard (thank you Tim Holtz). After the flaps were removed, I went to throw them in the trash, but my son said, “Mom, don’t throw that out, you can make something crafty with those pieces.” How right he was! So although today’s project features my hubby (before we were even married) and our first “child”, this was absolutely inspired by my sweet son.

Let’s get started!Kim Schofield, Corrugated Wall Hanging, TCW707, First Step

I first cut my piece of cardstock down to 5″ x 7″ and removed some of the paper backing so that the corrugated area could be seen. I added some washi tape, fabric pieces, and masking tape for texture.

Next, I covered the entire piece with a layer of watered down gesso.

I used the new Black Modeling Paste (fabulous!) and the One Way (TCW707) stencil to add some texture and design to the background. I love the look of the brick accents and the stencil includes corner pieces so it was so easy to add to edges of the cardboard.

While my embossing paste was drying, I die cut a few leaves and swirls (both Tim Holtz dies), from chipboard, covered them with gesso, and sprays the daylights out of them with Glimmer Mists. Using gesso will prevent the sprays from soaking into the cardboard and at first I was a little bummed about using the gesso. However, using my heat gun to move the ink around created amazing texture and movement. While the color may not be as deep if I had skipped the gesso, I was giddy over the final result.

Repeat the above steps on the dried background piece…swoon. I love the contrast of the black modeling paste with the paler background. Next…gathered all of your extra nick-nacks and embellishments. I used my die cut pieces, left over fabric piece, book text, butterfly from the new Tim Holtz ephemera packages, photo of my hubby, and some Prima embellies to decorate the piece. I used the TCW Gel Medium to attach all of the various pieces. Here are a few close up photos of my finished piece…

I love how Glimmer Mists give you just the slightest shimmer…so pretty.

Here’s a good look at that black modeling paste…so much fun! I hope you enjoyed today’s quick project! Links to the products below…happy crafting!
