ART BY MARLENE combines gold gesso, stencils and stamps in her Art Journal.

Hallo there everyone!

It is me, Marlene Meijer-van Niekerk, from ART BY MARLENE, sharing a new tutorial on The Crafter’s Workshop blog.

What do I have in store for you? Well, I will be combining the very lush gold gesso that The Crafter’s Workshop just launched, in their new mixed media line with their newest release stencils  and a lovely stampset, designed by Zorrotte for Carabelle studio. I will be doing this project in my art journal.

Let’s get started my artsy friends!

I will be using these 3 new stencil designs, that the talented Rebekah designed for, The Crafter’s Workshop. . I am using the 6″ x 6″ stencils.

TCW637-swirly-cue

CW637 Swirly Cue by Rebekah Meier. Available in large (12″ x 12″) and small (6″ x 6″).

TCW638-les-fleurs

TCW638 Les Fleurs by Rebekah Meier. Available in large (12″ x 12″) and small (6″ x 6″).

TCW639-star-quest

TCW639 Star Quest by Rebekah Meier. Available in large (12″ x 12″) and small (6″ x 6″).

I am using the new Shimmering Gold Gesso that The Crafter’s Workshop just launched. I am very impressed with this product, to say the least.

Pounce the gesso through your Les Fleurs stencil to begin with. Just use small parts of the stencil, you do not want to cover all of your background.

Repeat this on the opposite page, only using your favorite parts/details in the stencil.

It should look something like this.

For the next step, we will be using the Star Quest stencil. Repeat the process of stenciling only small details, instead of the whole stencil.

Once again…you just want to add a few details.

You now go on and repeat the process with your third and last stencil, called: Swirly Cue

To create contrast, I decided to stamp with black Archival ink and a cute stampset by Zorrotte

You can use  your creative freedom and stamp with any stamp set you like.

The next step is adding in color. First I am applying turquoise and indigo (cool tones/blues). Add it randomly and don’t forget to leave enough white space.

Last, but surely not least….add some warmer colors into your spread, to give it vibrancy. I used Opera pink and Yellow Gold

That was it…..you now have a playfull, vibrant mixed media journal spread.

I hope you enjoyed this short tutorial on how to combine stencils in a mixed media project.

Be sure, if you try this at home, to share it with us on social media.

See you soon!
