Here in the USA its the 4th of July so I thought it would be fun to do a super colorful project! I love fireworks and seeing the joy and excitement of families coming together and staring into the sky as explosions of color and magic happen! We are going to create a little color explosion ourselves using a gelli plate, a bunch of stencils and some acrylic paint! Lets get started!
Blank Strathmore Printmaking card or (make your own!)
Gelli Plate (5×7 or whatever you have)
Stencils TCW593, TCW600, TCW595, TCW603, TCW619
Faber Castel pens with a few tip sizes (brush, fine, medium)
White gel pen
Select 4 acrylic paint colors to work with and spend 45 minutes ( approximately 11 minutes on each color) printing with your gelli plate, create a set of sheets using each of your colors.
– Your goal is to end up with a lot of color, texture & mark variations in each of your 4 color sets
– Aim for completing as many sheets as you can get done in 11 minutes. (Set a timer to keep you on track)
– Use various versions of your colors or mix versions of your colors by using other colors plus black and white to lighten and darken them.
Review your finished color sheets and spend about 10 – 15 minutes cutting shapes out of the colored sheets, give yourself lots of options!
Things to think about as you cut shapes:
contrast (lights and darks)
basic shapes (square, circle triangle), organic blob shapes, weird or unusual shapes
cutting similar shapes create harmony
Create your composition by arranging your shapes on your card and then moving your pieces around until you see good color combinations, (warm and cool colors next to each other really pop and create visual interest) good size variation, and harmony. Once you have something you like start gluing down your shapes into your finished composition.
Use markers and the white gel pen to embellish, connect shapes, do some hand lettering create patterns etc. Stop and evaluate your piece as you go. You can always add more colored paper pieces!
Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate!
