Flowers Kissed by Fire – Art Journal Spread

Summer is in full swing here in the Midwest and one of my favorite things about summer is the Poppies! I love the red, black and green combination of color. The red is so intense that they look as if their delicate petals are made of fire. So the summer heat along with stencil TCW601 Poppy Field inspired this fun and fiery art journal spread. Follow along and lets explore the colors of summer along with some fun new mediums I picked up!

For this art journal spread I started by using a brayer to roll out a combination of red, yellow, and orange paint across my pages for a background. I selected a warm color palette to work with and since I just picked up some Daler-Rowney FW Flame Red Acrylic Ink I thought this would be a perfect way to try it out. I also selected some gesso, acrylic Ink, alcohol spray ink, white Copic ink, a few Faber Castell Markers and a green Stabilo 3in1 pencil.

To start I outlined a few of the poppies using my medium nib Faber Castell pen. I then sprayed over the stencil with Honeycomb colored spray ink. This gave some subtle contrast to the poppies but still allowed the red and orange colors from the background to show through.

I then used my gesso to tone down the area on the left page where I plan to do some hand lettering and I added white Copic Ink around the poppies on the right page. you can see the difference in opacity and effect of the two mediums.

Next I used  my Faber Castell brush tip pen to add a sun and leaves, my white gel pen to add additional white detailing around the poppies. Then I used my green Stabilo 3 in 1 pencil to color in the leaves and used water to give them a painterly look. The sun got some Indian Yellow acrylic Ink applied to it to give it some added dimension.

Next I used a paint brush to add Flame Red acrylic ink to the poppies and the sun. I also used my finger to smear the ink from the edges of the poppies outward to push them into the foreground and create depth and dimension.

To Finish the spread I added a bit of hand lettering and additional detail work to the poppies and the sun. By using the brush tip Faber Castell marker along with the Extra Fine Tip marker I created line variation and added interest in the detail work.
