A Collage on Canvas Tutorial with Mou Saha

Hi everyone, Mou Saha from colorhappycreations.com here today as guest blogger!

Creating mixed media collages in many layers is one of my most favorite things to do. Today I bring you a tutorial of one such collage using various The Crafters Workshop stencils by Rebekah Meier.

Before we begin, let me list my supplies for you:

TCW524 Stencil Tatting 12″ x 12″

TCW529 Stencil Ravenscape 12″ x 12″

TCW625 Class Picture 12″ x 12″

TCW626 Carte Postale 6″ x 6″

TCW523 Stencil Be In Love 6″ x 6″

9″ x 12″ canvas

Gel Medium

Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos colors

Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Whipped Spackle

Acrylic paints

Paint brushes

Sponge brush

Palette knife

Scrap papers

Start by adding a layer of found papers to the canvas. Color it with Gelatos colors. You could use acrylic paints or another coloring medium of your choice.

Lay the TCW524 Stencil Tatting 12″ x 12″ on the canvas and with a sponge brush, dab acrylic paint over it.

Lift the stencil to reveal the design. I love this stencil so much, I was tempted to leave it just like this!

Unlike the previous stencil, you are going to use the TCW529 Stencil Ravenscape 12″ x 12″ in parts rather than as a whole. Stencil the bird, some of the numbers and the postmark with various colors.

Next, lay the TCW625 Class Picture 12″ x 12″ stencil and add the flower and butterflies as the next layer.

So far, you only worked with the large stencils. You can add instant interest to your piece by varying the scale of design. All you have to do is take the smaller 6″ x 6″ stencils of your choice.

I used the TCW626 Carte Postale 6″ x 6″ and TCW523 Stencil Be In Love 6″ x 6″ stencils and applied some Whipped Spackle with a palette knife. You can use any molding paste for this. Let dry.

Go back to the TCW625 Class Picture 12″ x 12″ stencil to create the girl’s face on the canvas. Since this is the focal point of your canvas, use a darker color of paint to make it prominent.

Add a message with book text, stickers, etc. to the piece.

Here are a couple of close-ups of the finished piece.

Hope you enjoy the tutorial!
