Welcome back stencil fans! This is Rachel Kleinman on the blog today to share a bright floral art journal page. Now that it’s April, I feel like I can finally get back to using those colorful paints and my favorite flower stencils!
Let me walk you through how I created this page…
I’m going to try my best to remember all the stencils I used, because there are definitely a lot! I started by painting the entire page in a variety of pink shades of acrylic paint. Then with larger stencils I began to add teal, lime green, and purples. The background stencils you can see are Stockinette, Life Remembered, Doodle Bloom, Overlapping Stripes, and Orange Slices.
Next I took the Poppy Garden stencil and traced around the openings with pencil. Now I can see the stencil outline that will appear as my main image.
Since the colors are so bright, I had to start with a couple coats of Gesso throughout the page. Now I’ll paint over that with a blue acrylic paint…
Once the blue paint dried, I wasn’t very happy with the lack of definition between the flowers and the background. So I outlined them all again with a black pen.
Next I added some white doodles with a gel pen, used my paint pens to add some subtle background patterns, and finally wrote in a quote.
“Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.” – A.A. Milne
