I’ve been making inspiration cards for over a year now and sharing them on my Instagram page on Fridays. On the most recent ones, I seem to be a bit obsessed with the new stencil line and modeling paste!
Here’s a peek into how I make them…
The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. This post also contains affiliate links. The opinions I share are solely my own.
I originally started making the cards out of a deck of playing cards but I just ran out of them. So for the next batch, I decided to use up a bunch of manila file folders I have. I cut the file folder into pieces the same size as a playing card to keep that consistent. I then added a layer of white gesso to each card.
The next step was to add dimension to each of the cards with modeling paste and a few of the 6×6 stencils. For the three cards I made for this post, I used Cards and Lace, Doodle Bloom and Angel Wings. For the other three cards that you see in the group picture, I used Zia Sun Bit, Star Circle Bit and Profile with Dots Bit.
Adding a few pieces of torn Gelli® printed deli paper to the cards always gets me started with colors and of course, adds more texture.
I then went crazy adding color! I used sprays, acrylic paints, ink pads and Inktense pencils.
Of course, no project of mine seems to be complete without a bit of doodling using my favorite white gel pen! The final step is to add my inspirational saying which I typed on copy paper using an old typewriter. A bit of Inktense pencil shadowing helps anchor the words to the card and I’m all set to share the cards on Instagram!

Gorgeous these colorful cards!
What is Gelli printed deli paper please?
Deli paper is a dry wax paper (Not regular wax paper) that is often used to pull monoprints from a gelatin plate. You can sometimes find it at your local grocer or online.
Beautiful cards, I made a bunch with my art therapy class as well just recently ❤️
These cards are wonderful. I have one question: I don’t have a Gelli tool. Can you please suggest another way to paint the deli paper?
Thank you
I love making cards like this and then gifting them 🙂 thanks for the nudge to make some more.
Love how the modeling paste looks! Great use of old folders too.

Wonderful cards full of color, thanks for sharing your steps.
