Vintage Hearts Canvas

Hi friends! Carmen with your today and I hope you’re enjoying your Fall and getting ready for the Holidays.  But, I’ve got a little bit different theme tutorial for you today to change things up a bit.  I’ve created this Vintage Hearts canvas that can be created as a card or canvas and given as a gift.

Vintage Love Heart canvas created for The Crafter's Workshop by www.carmenwhitehead.com

Supplies:

  • 8″ x 10″ canvas
  • TCW567 Complicated Hearts 12″ x 12″
  • TCW579s Mini Sheet Music 6″ x 6″
  • Americana Acrylic paint, soft black, black plum
  • DecoArt DecouPage Medium
  • DecoArt Media Line Antiquing Cream – Raw Umber
  • Imagine Walnut Ink Crystals
  • DecoArt Media Line Crackle Paste
  • DecoArt Sealant Spray – Matte
  • Vintage book pages
  • Paper Doily
  1. I first layered the canvas with vintage dictionary pages I had in my stash.  I used the DecouPage medium to adhere and seal them.                                                                              Vintage Love Hearts canvas for The Crafter's Workshop created by www.carmenwhitehead.com
  2. To give the canvas a worn and vintage look I sprayed it with some diluted walnut ink crystals.  This ink stain is wonderful for achieving that and once dry it’s waterproof, so you can layer over it.  I also used TCW579s mini sheet music with Americana acrylic in Plum Black to give it a more whimsical look.                                                                                                     Love heart 2
  3. Using TCW567 Complicated Hearts stencil I applied a mixture of Plum Black and Media Line Crackle Paste.  Notice that the mixture is much lighter than the original paint.  Let the crackle paste dry naturally, I know it’s tempting to put a heat gun to it, but the effects come out better if it dries on it’s own.                                                                                                                                         Vintage Love Hearts canvas for The Crafter's Workshop created by www.carmenwhitehead.com
  4. I have a stash of paper heart doilies from the dollar store.  I tore the sheet in half and sprayed it with some walnut ink stain.  I let the puddles dry using the heat gun and that really brought out the texture in the paper. Once dry I adhered it to the canvas using DecouPage medium.                                                                                                                                           Love heart 4
  5. Using the Complicated Hearts stencil again, I stenciled the Love word using Soft Black acrylic paint.                                                                                                                                                  Vintage Love Hearts canvas for The Crafter's Workshop created by www.carmenwhitehead.com
  6. At this point the crackle paste heart was ready for some more details.  To really bring out the cracks and tone down the brightness of the color, I rubbed in DecoArt Media Line Antiquing Cream in Raw Umber.  I also applied some to the doily heart.  Wait a couple of minutes and then wipe off the excess cream with a baby wipe.  This will leave color only in the cracks and really give it some dimension.                            Vintage Love Hearts canvas for The Crafter's Workshop created by www.carmenwhitehead.com
  7. Once the canvas is dry, I sealed it with some DecoArt Sealant Spray in Matte finish.           Vintage Love Hearts canvas for The Crafter's Workshop created by www.carmenwhitehead.com
